In the workshop early this morning finishing this one off.

Came in at five to go back through the zips, strip them down and refurbish the Talon hardware properly. Gave the leather a final check and a good hand buff once the conditioning had settled in.

This jacket arrived in a pretty tired state. Heavy build-up sitting on the surface, dull, dry and not doing the hide any favours. First step was removing all of that old tack before it could even be worked on properly. From there it went through a full specialist clean, then left to rest and cure for the best part of a week before finishing.

The horsehide has come back exactly how it should. Strong, supple and holding its shape again, with that natural depth starting to show through properly.

Classic Aero double rider. Heavy front quarter horsehide, 1950s cross zip cut, Talon hardware throughout. Everything that makes these what they are.

Thinking I need to start showing more before and after on pieces like this. The work is there, just doesn’t always get seen.

Now finished and available on the website.

An Eastman Leather Clothing “Eric Hartmann” in black capeskin, in today as a private purchase.

We see a lot pass through the workshop, but every now and then something arrives that holds your attention a little longer. This is one of those pieces.

The silhouette is compact and deliberate, sitting clean at the waist with that close Luftwaffe profile. Nothing exaggerated, just well judged and properly balanced.

The capeskin has a natural ease to it. Soft and responsive, with a quiet grain that comes through across the panels. Still full of life, exactly how you’d hope to find one.

Fitted with original RiRi zips throughout, all running smooth and solid. The kind of detail that tells you the jacket has been well kept.

This one is now on the site for anyone looking for a strong example.

Edwin x Blitz x Stewart Leather S.E.B. Motorcycle Jacket

A highly considered piece from the 2013 collaboration between Edwin, Blitz Motorcycles and Stewart Leather, and a rarer example in this darker finish.

In the workshop this morning, this was one you notice straight away. The construction is clean and controlled, with a close, purposeful cut that reflects its racing influence without excess. Everything sits where it should.

The horsehide is substantial, dense and structured, still holding its shape with ease, a clear sign of how little wear it has seen. Privately owned from new, it remains lightly worn and well preserved.

RiRi hardware is fitted throughout, operating smoothly with that solid, precise feel you expect at this level. The jacket has been carefully cleaned and lightly conditioned in the workshop to maintain the balance of the leather while preserving its original finish.

A strong example of a collaboration done properly, where material, design and construction are all given equal weight.

A true 1950s French Motorcycle Jacket

A good example of how these pieces should be handled.

This one came in with a heavily worked surface and a well-developed patina built through years of use. The aim wasn’t to change that, only to bring the leather back into balance and allow it to sit as it should.

The cowhide remains strong and structured, with natural wear sitting within the grain rather than on top of it. Areas of chapping and tonal variation have been left as part of the jacket’s history, rather than worked over.

Original details remain throughout, including the Paris label and period hardware, all functioning as intended.

Everything here is about restraint. Knowing what to address, and what to leave alone.

Garments shaped by time. Revived to endure.

This 1940s Austrian horsehide jacket has been carefully worked back through the workshop, with the focus placed on recovery rather than alteration.

When it arrived, the surface was heavily compromised and the jacket required a full reset. The leather was taken through a specialist clean, removing built-up oils and contamination from within the fibres rather than masking the surface. Once cleared, it was left to settle and rebalance before being reintroduced to a controlled dressing after curing.

The original hardware has been retained and brought back into proper working order, keeping the jacket true to its construction. The fur collar was carefully cleaned and treated, restoring structure and reducing shedding while maintaining its natural feel.

The horsehide itself remains strong and full of character, with natural tonal variation running through the surface. What’s left is an honest piece of 1940s Austrian leatherwear, brought back into a stable, wearable condition without forcing or overworking the material.

This is the approach we take with every piece. Preserve what matters. Recover what’s there. Let the jacket speak for itself.

Designed for winter patrol rather than presentation.

This 1950s American police leather coat carries the weight and authority of municipal issue construction. Long in the body, double breasted, and secured with a full waist belt, it was built to sit over a uniform in prolonged cold exposure.

The cowhide is dense and substantial, with open grain and surface wear developed through real service use. Pigment abrasion at the cuffs and edges reflects duty rather than decorative ageing. The shaped shoulder construction supports the coat’s weight across the upper back, maintaining structure without excess bulk.

Original Waterbury “P” buttons remain fitted, along with the reinforced four point badge mount at the chest.

Inside, genuine sheepskin lining provides insulation throughout the body. Blue sleeve lining allows movement, while leather underarm reinforcement and corduroy facings at the hem and front opening underline its practical specification.

Professionally cleaned and conditioned in the workshop to preserve suppleness while retaining its working character.

A serious piece of mid century American law enforcement outerwear.

Mid century German motorcycle jacket in dense black horsehide.

A compact, protection focused riding pattern typical of 1940s to early 1950s German production. Cut close to the body to sit securely in the riding position, with a disciplined silhouette and strong waist definition.

The horsehide is tight grained and tensile, carrying a rich, layered patina built over decades. Natural creasing through the sleeves and torso maps movement and use. High contact areas show honest burnishing and tonal shift. The hide remains supple and structurally sound.

Twin horizontal chest zip pockets sit high across the front, with angled hand warmer pockets below. Side waist adjustment straps retain their chrome buckles. The jacket is fitted with Ritsch metal zippers, a German manufacturer active from the 1930s through the 1950s. One pull to the left chest pocket has been replaced historically, the remaining hardware is original.

When it arrived, the hardware was seized and no longer functional. All zips and metal components have since been carefully refurbished in the workshop and returned to full working order. The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned using a preservation led approach, restoring suppleness without altering surface character.

A serious German riding jacket defined by integrity of material, correct period hardware and authentic wear.

Late 1930s Luftwaffe private purchase fighter pilot jacket.

A double breasted officer’s Eigentumsstück example associated with early Jagdflieger units. Compact through the body, cut high on the waist, broad lapels and leather football buttons defining the silhouette. Tailored rather than issued.

When it arrived, the structure was strong but the surface had dulled with age and long storage. The leather carried ingrained dirt and had begun to lose surface vitality. Intervention was necessary, but restraint was critical.

Constructed from mid weight German leather with a natural drape and tight, even grain. The deep brown tone has matured evenly, and once cleaned, the hide revealed subtle burnishing at the high points without weakness or dryness beneath. It has been professionally cleaned in the workshop and carefully conditioned to restore essential oils while preserving original texture and patina. No cosmetic alteration. No artificial finish.

Original Rheinnadel D.R.P. waist zips remain in place. Side adjustment straps retain their metal buckles. The majority of leather football buttons are original, with period replacements added during its working life. The lapel eagle was historically removed, with stitch impressions still visible.

Now clean, supple and structurally sound, it stands as a serious early private purchase configuration with material integrity intact.

Arctic weight. No compromise.

1980s Avirex B7 in heavyweight sheepskin, cut with intent and built to endure. Deep brown exterior with natural character, dense full shearling throughout, and a properly scaled Arctic hood trimmed in genuine coyote fur.

Strap and button storm front over a wind guard, angled hand warmers, chest zips and large lower utility pockets in contrasting dark leather. The proportions are deliberate. The insulation is real.

Professionally cleaned and carefully conditioned in house. The wool remains dense, the leather supple, hardware fully functional. Excellent vintage condition.

Most damage to vintage leather doesn’t come from age. It comes from over-conditioning.

Heavy products, applied too often, slowly change the structure of the hide. Grain softens. Shape collapses. The surface dulls.

In the workshop, we approach conditioning with restraint. Leather needs maintenance, not transformation.

We’ve written more about our approach to leather care. Full article linked in the comments.

Post-War European utilitarian | Late 1940s horsehide coat

This coat came to us in poor condition. Dry, heavily soiled, and neglected for decades. The structure was still there, but it required proper intervention to be preserved rather than simply presented.

Cut long in the body and belted through the waist, it reflects a post-war European approach to utilitarian outerwear. Purposeful, authoritative, and built for longevity rather than fashion. The presence is immediate.

Constructed from dense mid-century horsehide, the leather is thick and weighty, with a deep brown tone that has aged naturally over time. The surface now shows a rich, even patina, with natural grain variation that gives depth without compromising structure. Inside, the original moleskin lining adds warmth and reinforces the garment’s functional intent. The internal body belt allows discreet adjustment beneath the outer shell, complemented by the full exterior belt and buckled cuffs.

The coat has been professionally cleaned to remove decades of embedded dirt, then carefully conditioned to return essential oils to the hide. The work was carried out with restraint, preserving the original surface and character rather than altering it. No cosmetic enhancement, no artificial finish.

Now clean, supple, and structurally sound, it stands as a rare and complete example of late 1940s European horsehide outerwear.

A proper British classic | The 384.

This Lewis Leathers rider was a private purchase and seldom worn, evident in the condition of the leather. The hide remains rich and supple, with only light natural creasing and none of the fatigue seen on heavily used examples.

Only a careful surface clean has been carried out. Nothing further was required. All original details remain intact, from the asymmetric zip and belt to the sleeve hardware, all functioning as intended.

A clean, honest jacket with presence and longevity. For someone who understands these pieces rather than simply wearing one.

Available now.
