For those of you have come across us but aren't sure who and what Woolplay is, here's a brief introduction

Woolplay is a small British wool business rooted in a love of sheep, slow making and yarn with a story. Founded by Claire a passionate shepherd and wool enthusiast, Woolplay began with a flock of beautiful Leicester Longwool sheep and a simple belief: the wool grown here in Britain deserves to be celebrated. From the field to the finished skein, every fibre carries a connection—to a breed, a landscape, a flock and the people who care for them.

We stock 100% British wool yarns and fibres, including breed-specific yarns from our own Leicester Longwool flock and other local flocks on the Norfolk/Suffolk borders and niche British wool mills. We choose wool for its provenance, traceability, character and quality—not because it fits a fast-fashion trend.

This is yarn for knitters, crocheters, spinners, weavers and makers who want to know where their materials come from. Yarn that is warm, practical, wonderfully individual and made to be used, loved and mended. Yarn that doesn't have a huge carbon footprint.

At Woolplay, we’re here for the joy of making something slowly—and for keeping British wool, rare breeds and traditional skills part of our future.

Follow along for sheep updates, woolly education and inspiration and plenty of beautiful British yarn. 🤍

The Woolplay studio is reopening tomorrow after our summer break — just in time for September’s gentle shift into fresh routines, new projects, and slower evenings.

It'll be open as usual from 10 till 4 Thursday through to Saturday. And we have cake + make on Saturday morning from 10.30 till 1pm.

I always like this time of year: life starts to find its rhythm again after the more unplanned summertime. Diaries fill up as groups start meeting again and the thought of making something with your hands feels wonderfully grounding especially now the temperature has dropped.

Whether you’re returning to a half-finished knitting project, choosing yarn for an autumn sweater, trying crochet for the first time, or simply craving an hour of quiet creativity, wool crafts offer a small pause in the return to “normal.”

We can’t wait to welcome you back into the studio, surrounded by beautiful British wool, colour, conversation and plenty of making inspiration.

What will be on your needles or hook this September?

I pulled the middle out of this week's hay bale and the sheep tucked in!

No these are not mine! I visited Burnt Fen Alpacas with other members of one of the Guilds I belong to meet the alpacas and learn about their fleeces. Annie has kept them for many years and she is an expert in both husbandry and their fleeces. She spins, weaves and natural dyes. We had a great afternoon

For once I got on with making my cushions
from the cloth I'd woven.

I'm very pleased with how they have come out.

Thought I'd fill a hanging basket with the dyed fleece samples from the dyeing course so they could be a constant inspiration

I've been weaving a warp in various tabby and twill designs for three cushion covers s and their backs over the last couple of months when I've had some spare time. Today I finished it! Next is wet finishing and then making the cushions.

Already planning the next warp!

❤️

My fab natural dyeing week run by The Outside has come to an end. Completely exhausted but so inspired. I've learnt lots that I can't wait to put into practice and have come away with so many samples that I am determined to convert them into a journal.
