Colour, weight, fibre content, construction and finish all matter when you’re choosing fabrics for production.

Sustainability has become one of the biggest conversations in manufacturing ♻️

But in the sleep industry, it's not always obvious where those changes are happening.

Bank Holiday Notice 📢‼️

Just a quick update to let you know we’ll be closed over the upcoming Bank Holiday period.

We’ll be closed from Friday 22nd May through to Monday 25th May. During this time, our office, warehouse, and deliveries will all be paused.

Last despatch will be Thursday 21st May, with delivery scheduled for Tuesday 26th May.

Any enquiries or orders placed while we’re closed will be picked up and processed as soon as we’re back.

We’ll be back to normal operations first thing Tuesday morning, ready to keep everything moving as usual.

Over 260 years ago, a Lancashire weaver named James Hargreaves played a major role in transforming the textile industry 🧶🪡

His invention, the Spinning Jenny, enabled a single worker to spin multiple threads simultaneously. It was one of several key innovations behind the early stages of the Industrial Revolution, helping to increase yarn production and support the shift towards mechanised manufacturing. Alongside other developments of the time, it contributed to a shift that reshaped textile production forever 🌍

Lancashire quickly became the centre of that growth. With its mills, workforce, and access to trade routes, the region helped establish Britain as a global leader in cotton and textiles. It makes for a great story!

It’s a story that still feels very close to home for us here at Original Fabrics…

James Hargreaves is a direct relative of our team today, and that connection to textiles has continued ever since. What started in the 1700s has been carried through each generation, evolving alongside the industry itself.

Our Managing Director, Simon Hargreaves, has over 40 years of experience in the textile trade. His son Tom joined the business in 2008 and now represents the seventh generation of the Hargreaves family working within the industry, still based in lovely Lancashire 🌹

From the early days of the Industrial Revolution to today, we’re still part of the same industry over 260 years later, still doing what we’ve always done best – textiles.

What happens before a fabric ever reaches your production line? 🧶

It’s easy to think of fabric supply as rolls arriving when you need them, ready to go. In reality, a lot happens long before that point.

As the largest importer and distributor of mattress ticking fabric in the UK, we work closely with trusted mills and manufacturers to source quality fabrics for our customers.

Most projects start with a conversation. Whether it’s a new range, a design idea, or a specific requirement, we work closely with customers to select and develop fabrics that meet both aesthetic and performance requirements.

From there, testing plays a big role. Fibre composition, weight, construction, and colour are all checked to ensure the fabric performs as expected, not just visually but in real use.

We also conduct our own in-house testing and work with external laboratories when more detailed analysis is needed, helping make sure every roll of fabric meets the demands of production and long-term use 🧪
