Eminent women in fashion....
Born Louise Lemaire, known as Mme Louise Chéruit, she was one of the ✨first ✨women to control a major French fashion house. Her fashion house in the Place Vendôme in Paris under the name Chéruit, opened 1906. Born in 1866, she trained with Ernest Raudnitz in Paris in the 1880's. Mme Chéruit became one of the most noted designers of her time, with new unveilings that were closely followed by the press. Her walking suits and afternoon dresses became fashion staples in 1914. When World War I struck most Paris fashion houses shut down, but Chéruit remained open. With simpler fashions in the 1920s, Chéruit’s opulent tastes lost appeal. Mme Chéruit retired in 1923, but her Paris house of couture continued to produce talked about fashions, including flapper styles, until 1935.
Mme Louise Chéruit died in 1955 but some of her work can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
