✨ Draping on the Stand — Designing with Fabric in Mind ✨

This style has been created using the traditional method of draping on the stand — a way of designing that allows the garment to evolve directly from the fabric, creating innovative and sometimes unexpected silhouettes.

Rather than sketching a design first, I begin with the fabric itself. I carefully consider its width, length, weight and drape, with the aim of using the fabric as economically as possible and utilising the full piece wherever I can, while minimising waste.

This approach means that sustainability is considered from the very beginning of the design process, rather than being an afterthought. The relationship between fabric and form becomes an integral part of creating the garment.

Structure can then be introduced through techniques such as a b***d bodice beneath the outer layer, allowing the finished piece to combine softness, structure and elegance.

My service focuses on creating bespoke bridalwear and occasionwear, designed and handcrafted using beautiful, high-quality breathable, natural fabrics. My aim is to create timeless, contemporary garments that celebrate exceptional craftsmanship and the beauty of premium, more sustainable fabrics.

Every garment begins with the fabric — and from there, the design takes shape.

✨ A work trip to London… with a little fashion history along the way!

The first stop yesterday, was the Marilyn Monroe exhibition, at the National Portrait Gallery.
Marilyn has a special place in my own fashion story, as I drew inspiration from her in the early 1980s when I designed my 1950s-inspired final collection while completing my HND in Fashion.
Today we headed to the V&A Museum to see Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art. Elsa Schiaparelli (1890–1973) was an Italian fashion designer whose work became the focus of one of my research projects while I was completing my Degree in International Fashion.
It was lovely be able to revisit two very different sources of inspiration from different stages of my fashion education and career. Both exhibitions brought back lots of memories — and, will hopefully, spark plenty of new ideas for future designs! ✂️✨
Sometimes you have to look back to move forward… and I’m looking forward to seeing where these inspirations take me next. 💫

A London Work Trip, Fabrics & Fashion

We are on a wonderful work trip to London, visiting exhibitions and fabric shops to source fabrics for my occasion wear service.

Our first stop was the Mariyn Monroe exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, which explores her life, career and enduring legacy. Marilyn has long been an inspiration for my clothing designs, so it was a pleasure to explore the exhibition and learn more about the woman behind the iconic image. Her style, femininity and timeless glamour continues to influence my work.

Our second stop was to visit the many fabric shops around Sheperd's Bush Market, where we spent time searching for beauful bridal and occasion-wear fabrics. There's nothing quite like seeing and feeling fabrics in person. Trips like these are an important part of my creative process, finding inspiration and discovering new fabrics.

I can't wait to bring some of these new ideas and inspirations into my upcoming bridal and occasion-wear designs.

✨ Creating Your Bespoke Bridal Look — Starting with the Bodice ✨

A b***d bodice provides the foundation for the structure of a bridal dress or outfit. The bodice shown in these images is b***d and fully lined, creating a beautiful, supportive base from which a truly bespoke bridal look can be developed.

Your bodice can be created to your exact measurements, helping to shape and accentuate the waist while providing the perfect starting point for your individual design.

And this is where the creativity begins… 🤍

The bodice can be made in a choice of beautiful fabrics and adapted to create completely different looks. You could choose:

• Different neckline shapes
• Elegant draping using contrasting or complementary fabrics
• A variety of trims and decorative details
• Long or short sleeves
• Different skirt styles to completely transform the outfit

Your bodice could be paired with a straight skirt, fluted skirt or a full overskirt — meaning one beautifully constructed bodice can become the basis for several different looks throughout your wedding day.

The possibilities really are endless. ✨

🌿 And then there’s something I feel is incredibly important — FABRIC CHOICE.
As I have mentioned in previous posts, many wedding dresses are produced using polyester. Polyester is a synthetic fibre and is not breathable, which may not make it the most comfortable choice for a summer or destination wedding.

There are, however, some wonderful sustainable alternatives available.

For example:

Silk Crepe — GOTS Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard).
Derived from the silk worm cocoon, silk is naturally breathable and comfortable to wear, making it a beautiful option for warmer weather.

Viscose — GRS Certified (Global Recycled Standard). FSC Declaration (From responsibly managed forests).
Derived from wood pulp, viscose can also offer a breathable and comfortable alternative.

These fabric choices are more expensive than polyester, but for me, creating a bespoke garment is about quality, thoughtful design and making considered choices.

I also carefully consider fabric usage when designing each garment. I aim to keep fabric wastage as low as possible, and where there is spare fabric, I look at ways it can be incorporated into other requirements for the client or their wedding party.

After all, there is something rather more romantic about saying:

“My beautiful silk wedding gown…”
than
“My beautiful polyester wedding gown.” 🤍

Your wedding outfit should not only look beautiful — it should feel beautiful to wear, reflect your personality and be created with thought and care.

💍 Rethinking the Wedding Dress 🌿
Your wedding dress should make you feel beautiful, comfortable and completely yourself — but it doesn’t have to cost the earth. 🌍🤍
Wedding dresses are often worn just once, contributing to the waste and pollution created by the fashion industry. Many are made from polyester, a fossil-fuel-based, non-biodegradable fabric that can take decades, or even centuries, to break down.
I’ve also spoken with many brides who worry about feeling too hot and uncomfortable on their wedding day, particularly during fittings. Choosing breathable, natural fabrics can make a real difference — not only to comfort, but also to sustainability. 🌱

🌟 Celebrating Michelle’s Sewing Success! 🧵✨

I’d like to introduce Michelle, one of our fantastic attendees at the Sunshine House sewing class. Michelle has made incredible progress in a short space of time and has really excelled at creating her own clothing. 👏

Through her sewing journey, Michelle has developed a fantastic range of skills, including:

🧵 Using commercial patterns to make a garment
📏 Measuring patterns to achieve the correct sizing
✂️ Amending patterns for the perfect fit
Choosing the correct fabric for the style of garment
Selecting the right trims, including zips, thread, interfacing and buttons
✂️ Developing economical cutting skills
👗 Building confidence in garment construction

The beautiful dress Michelle has made also demonstrates her eye for design. Her choices of fabric print, colours and trims, including the buttons, have all come together to create a stylish and individual garment. 🌸

Michelle has chosen cotton, which is breathable and a perfect fabric choice for the recent warmer temperatures. ☀️

It’s wonderful to see how much Michelle has achieved in such a short time. Her confidence, creativity and growing technical skills are really shining through. Well done, Michelle! 💕🧵👏

I’ve been so touched by the kindness of the Sunshine House sewing attendees who attend my classes. I recently received some beautiful flowers from one attendee, and another generously brought in lovely plants for us all to take home and plant in our gardens. We truly have such a warm, thoughtful, and talented group, and I feel very grateful to be part of it.

This waistcoat was beautifully made by one of my Garment Design and Construction workshop attendees. Having previously only made a top, it was wonderful to see how happy she was with the finished results of both the top and the waistcoat.

Throughout the process, she developed a range of valuable skills, including:
• Garment construction techniques
• Selecting appropriate seams for a semi-structured lined garment
• Choosing the correct interfacing for 100% wool fabric
• Creating a pattern for a lined garment
• Fitting the garment and making adjustments for the perfect fit
• Using automatic buttonholes and hand-sewing buttons

A fantastic achievement and a piece to be proud of!

As usual the garments were made out of upcycled materials.

I’ve been quietly working behind the scenes on my latest look book for my bespoke, sustainable bridal wear service 🤍

One thing I keep hearing time and time again… “What do I do with my wedding dress after the big day?”

So I’m designing with life beyond the wedding in mind.

This featured style is built around versatility:
A shorter dress layered with a detachable long overskirt.

After the wedding, the possibilities are endless:
✨ The shorter dress can be styled for events
✨ It can be shortened further for elegant daywear
✨ The overskirt can be paired with other pieces for new looks
✨ Or even transformed into something meaningful like a cape or Christening gown

Because your dress should be worn, loved, and lived in—more than once.

And just as important as design is fabric.

I’m currently sourcing sustainable, breathable materials—moving away from traditional polyester (which is non-biodegradable and traps heat), and towards more conscious choices.

My focus is on blends like:
• Viscose (for breathability)
• Acetate (for a beautiful sheen)
• Elastane (for comfort and movement)

The goal? Bridalwear that feels as good as it looks—light, breathable, comfortable, and made to last beyond a single day.
