OUTDATED? / Buying vintage never goes out of style, as the ever-cool, award-winning knows all too well. That’s why they asked WRV and to write about how we got into the business on P75 of their November issue. In it, find out why the phrase, “I love it but what would I use it for?” is my least favourite response to my vintage pieces.

HOLIDAY BLUES / Inspired by a recent trip to Malta and its unfeasibly saturated shades of turquoise, I found myself putting together a collection of this most evocative of tones. I have named it Island Blues. It includes absolutely nothing Maltese but you can’t have everything.

🩵 Vintage 1960s Anglia Pottery cat, £18

🩵 Pair of replica Chinese turquoise glazed guardian lions/foo dogs, 12cm h, £28
This pair are two identical males. Traditional foo dogs were male and female figures placed outside temples. The male holds a sphere, representing the physical, while the female would hold a cub, denoting the spirit. The male protected the building from harm and the female, the people.

🩵 Turquoise crackle glazed studio pottery boat bowl, £30

SOFT LANDING / What a fantastic surprise I got this morning when a beautiful cushion was delivered to me out of the blue! No idea who it was from and no message. But I had a good guess and I guessed right! It was a gift from my lovely friend, skilled fashion designer and vintage seller Jane from . She made it herself with vintage St Michael fabric. When I messaged to ask if it was her, she said, ‘Yep, me. Random gifts to bring joy.’ It definitely did that!

RED, NOT DEAD / It’s my favourite time in spring, when quince blossoms appear, like drops of blood on the branches. So I style them with tasteful foreboding and doom. Just perfect for the season of light and life, right? 🖤❤️ These striking Memphis Milano-style vases in inkiest black and ripest red couldn’t be more fitting. Or more chic.

£95 each

I’ll throw in the quince too, if you’re quick enough. Message me for more info. And gloomy styling tips, if you’re that way inclined.

NEW TO YOU / At Wild Rosamund Vintage I don’t always wear vintage (although pretty much every outfit includes *something* secondhand). Sometimes I buy new from makers and independent businesses, because I hate big corporations such as Amazon who don’t pay enough taxes and because I want to support teeny-tiny businesses like my own. This fabulous necklace and earrings set by from , is a case in point. I bought it to style my vintage ‘80s jumpsuit from . I’m so woke and worthy I even annoy myself sometimes. 😂

OUT OF LINE? / More beauty from . I found myself fascinated by the repetition of line, form and colour in this house. Everything was so precise, so considered, so neat. I even found my shot compositions adhering to line and/or symmetry. I wondered to myself - like the philistine I am - how easy it would have been to live ‘normally’ enveloped in such a structured aesthetic. Would you develop an aversion to things out of line, or would you experience a new-found revelry in the disruptive glory of a flung-down book, for example, or a crumpled bedspread? I don’t know, but at times I found it sublime, at others, uneasy.

ART OF DARKNESS / Yesterday I took myself off on a glorious solo day trip to Northampton to see , the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It was as achingly beautiful and exquisitely designed as I’d hoped.

I even dressed in the same colours as the most dramatic room in the house because tragic insta-matching is a thing. To my delight, the house manager, Liz, noticed and commented. Also to my delight SHE was wearing earrings of the famous lemon in a bowl at Kettles Yard in Cambridge! Another of my favourite museums. Kindred spirits united by acid yellow.

I wish I’d thought to ask for a photo of us together. Instead, I gave her my business card and wondered round, thinking about splendid arrangements of yellow spring flowers in matte black Art Deco vases.

WAIT AND SEE / I took a photo of my child lying on the bench at the doctors’ surgery this morning. He thought I took it because he looked cool. It was actually because the bench looked cool. He need never know. I like its chunky 1970s legs. They remind me of my own.

The primary colours of these vases tone perfectly with early spring flowers. Left to right, high decorative detail of Victorian sky blue opaline/milk glass; sleek egg yolk yellow of 1960s cased glass; and the impressed detail and glossy glaze of a cherry red, mid-century Italian vase by Bitossi.
