Colour is an important part of branding. This is why brands trademark their colours, think Cadbury purple or Tiffany blue. Heinz went a step further in their latest campaign and used their red to protect the sauce itself. Find out how they did it in our latest blog post.

Design hierarchy is the organisation of visual elements to create a logical structure. There are numerous ways that parts of a design can be given more, "weight", including;

Size - Larger elements or fonts grab attention first
Colour - Different colours can be used to add importance
Contrast - The most important elements should have the most contrast
Focal point - This is where the eye looks first

Done well hierarchy helps users understand and navigate the information.

In the second of our Design Principle series, we're looking at contrast. Contrast uses opposing elements to create visual interest and draw attention to key parts of a design.

Contrast is achieved by placing two or more elements with opposing characteristics together. These characteristics can be any visual element including:

- Colour

- Shape

- Size

- Material

- Texture

- Style

It's important to use contrast in a balanced way - too much is like adding too much salt to a recipe. You need just enough contrast to bring out the "flavour" of a design, to draw attention and to add variety or drama.

Welcome to our Design Principles series. Today we're looking at the negative, or rather negative space, also known as white space. It's the empty space between and around the visual components of a design. It can be any colour, texture, pattern, or even a background image. Negative space can:

Create balance: Negative space creates a balance between design elements and provides visual breathing room for content.

Frame and organise: Negative space frames, organises, and highlights elements in your design.

Make content more attractive: Negative space can make content more attractive, easier to read, and drive more interaction.

Establish visual hierarchy
Negative space is a powerful tool for establishing a visual hierarchy, alongside other principles such as size and color.

So next time you see a logo or company branding that looks good - see if you can spot the negative!

Text logos are the original (and some would say the best) branding.

Many that have stood the test of time were just the business name written in the owner's handwriting. This gives script logos a feel of tradition and heritage, take a look at Disney and Coca Cola for example.

Bold graphics feel more modern, think of Sony and IBM.

Text logos are still a great way to make your business stand out, as long as the look matches the brand you're on to a winner.
