✨ Bustles Explained ✨

One of the questions I'm asked most often during alterations appointments is:

"Do I need a bustle?"

A bustle is designed to lift your train after the ceremony, making it easier to walk, mingle and dance without carrying your train around all evening.

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on your dress, train length and plans for the day, we might choose a wrist loop, American bustle, French bustle, ballroom bustle — or even a combination of options.

And one important thing to remember...

🚫 Those little hanging loops sewn inside your train are not wrist loops or bustles. They're there for storing your dress, not carrying the weight of your train.

2027 Brides please note that there is a link for a Google form in the booking notes (and also on your email confirmation). You MUST complete this form upon requesting your appointment. I can not review your appointment request without relevant information such as your wedding date. It's fine if you have not chosen your dress yet but please still fill out what you can.

I do not want to chase up brides for this information, especially this time of year, peak wedding season when there is not much spare time. Equally I do not want to decline your appointment request because you haven't filled one out and are not replying to my texts!

Last year, thanks to the support of my wonderful brides, I was honoured to be named 2026 Wedding Seamstress of the Year – Scotland at The Wedding Industry Awards.

Every alteration is about helping a bride feel comfortable, confident and completely herself on her wedding day.

For Flossie's dress, alterations included:
• Lifting the shoulders
• Taking in the sides for a more tailored fit
• Adding cups for support and shape
• Adjusting the length
• Creating a bustle so she could move easily from ceremony to celebration

The result was a gown that fitted beautifully and allowed Flossie to enjoy every moment of her day at Loch Tay.

Let's talk about this bustle... 👀✨

When Eppie came for her alterations, we knew her wedding dress needed to work just as hard on the dance floor as it did during the ceremony.
The skirt originally featured a beautiful long train, but for the evening we created a dramatic double bustle that completely transformed the look while keeping all the movement and elegance.
We also added discreet poppers at the front of the skirt so that after a shoe change, the hem could be lifted slightly for dancing and celebrating comfortably.

These are the details most people never notice, but they're often what make the biggest difference on the wedding day.

A bustle isn't just about getting the train off the floor. It's about helping you move, dance, twirl and enjoy every moment without worrying about your dress.

And judging by these photos, I'd say it did exactly that 🤍✨ I had so much fun creating this.

Some brides stay with you long after the final fitting, and Eppie is definitely one of them 🤍

Eppie wore a beautiful two-piece bridal look featuring a delicate lace bodysuit and separate skirt, and it was such a pleasure helping bring everything together for her wedding day.

Together we:
✨ Tailored the fit of the lace bodysuit
✨ Lifted the shoulders and adjusted the sleeves
✨ Took in the skirt and shortened the length
✨ Added a wrist loop and dramatic evening bustle
✨ Created options to make moving, dancing and celebrating easier throughout the day

The result was a gown that looked beautiful, felt comfortable, and allowed Eppie to enjoy every moment of her wedding day.

We also carried out alterations to the mother of the brides outfit (dress with coat).

One of the loveliest parts of my job is receiving wedding photos afterwards, but Eppie and Iain went one step further and sent me a thank you card along with a keepsake newspaper from their wedding day. It was such a thoughtful surprise and means more than you know.
