Stitches in Time by Fiona

Stitches in Time by Fiona Providing a range of sewing and other handicraft services, including dressmaking, pattern production Hi. I finished some of her unfinished projects as I learnt.

I'm Fiona, wife to Simon and mother of two secondary school boys. I've lived in Keswick since my older son was two weeks old, and absolutely love it here. I have always loved making things...... sewing, crochet, painting, embroidery and many other handicrafts. My mum taught me the basics of dressmaking and using a sewing machine when I was a young teen. Later, I attended evening classes of Advanc

ed Dressmaking for a couple of years in my mid-twenties, hoping at the time to incorporate this into my working life. This didn't become possible for nearly twenty years, but since attending Creative Dressmaking classes here in Keswick, in 2012 I started working for a local company, making simple cushions and soft toy accessories for educational games. As well as this, I started to sew clothing, and make repairs and alterations, largely for friends, and slowly built up my business simply by word of mouth. Over the years, I have made ballgowns, wedding dresses, tops, skirts and trousers, I have replaced skirt, jacket and trouser zips, I have shortened garments or let garments out, and I have produced patterns from existing garments, making new ones. I have also enjoyed making cushions and seat pads, altering or making curtains, and incorporating my love of crochet into some of my projects too! I am now ready and able to put more time into the business, and look forward to meeting new clients and accepting new challenges! Please send me a message if you'd like to discuss a sewing project with me. Thank you!

This week I've also started alterations on a wedding dress, a mother-of-the-bride outfit, and a bridesmaid's dress.

These are a set of heavy curtains which I relined for a client, giving them a new lease of life. I always enjoy the final touches of hand sewing the corners of curtains, bringing the project to completion.
I have also just repaired a set of Roman blinds (no photo this time sorry!). I love to think that I can repair something that would otherwise be thrown away. I'm happy to look at any item to see if I can suggest a way it can be repaired or repurposed.

These are one pair of a set of four pairs of trousers that I made for a client, taking the pattern from an existing pair of trousers. Her existing pairs always pull at the pocket so I added a few reinforcing stitches there.

Do you have a pair of trousers or a jacket with a broken zip? I can replace them and give a new life to your garment!

A few examples of crocheted items I have created.

I was taught to crochet aged about 8 by a family friend, "Aunty" Gwen.

I have made tops, jackets, baby clothes and even dresses over the years, but nowadays I tend to make smaller items, like this rattle and these bootees.
