The process of ‘fragments’ II…
The textiles, sound and movement of the piece all developed together in a very organic way. Jay’s sound incorporated parts of the building, parts of the studio equipment, fabric being cut and even the sound of Michelle wearing the textiles.
The movement changed slightly over time according to the way the textiles formed. The base layer is made from stretch jersey which was draped on the stand and manipulated to look like peeling paper or paint. The stretch allowed Michelle to move freely. In contrast, the jacket is made from a woven tweed with no stretch. While the spirit has free movement of their domain, there’s still a sense of being bound to the walls of the building with an element of constraint. Where does the spirit end and the building begin?
Swipe for textiles in development, research photographs and toile fittings.

The process of ‘fragments’ I…
It started with an idea that I’d been considering since exhibiting in the Unthinkable X Hari exhibition, ‘Warm the Outside Pool Up’ in September 2025. ‘Ocelum’ was inspired by Spurn Point and my relationship with the world around me. I came to think of Ocelum as a spectre - a reflection of me in just one time and space. It made me think of all the other spectres I may want to conjure.

The spirit of 25 was one such spectre at the forefront of my mind. 25 Francis St, the home to Atelier 8. the studio where I now make my work, and a building that is inspiring some really exciting art in the city… I wanted to use the very walls as inspiration for a new textile piece. Not just the physical building but the very essence and aura of it, memories of people past and present who have walked its floors.

I knew early on that it couldn’t be textile alone. The textiles would be more than garments. But rather the very flesh of the spirit. But the spirit deserved to come to life in a multi faceted way, more than mere skin and sinew. Early conversations with Michelle Dee and Jay Moy found three ways of thinking join in a unique way. An idea I’d been considering for a while, simultaneously aligned with the ideas of my soon to be collaborators. And ‘fragments’ started to come to life.

Photos show an early sketch, some of the photography that inspired the piece, and the early toiling stages.

Last night felt very special.

Thank you to everyone who came to support me and fellow artists and designers from Atelier 8. It was so lovely to show you what we do, and the diverse range of practice that goes on behind our studio doors.

It was a pleasure to present ‘fragments’ at the end of the evening. Thanks to everyone who stayed until the end to see it, and for all the kind words. I feel very lucky that it resonated in a such a way with so many of you.

It has been such a fulfilling collaboration. Thank you to Jay Moy and Michelle Dee for being wonderful collaborators. It really has been a great experience bringing textile, movement and sound together.

If you missed the preview last night, there’s plenty of time to see the exhibition. It runs until 31st May, Thursdays - Mondays, 12-6pm in Hari, 25, Francis Street, Hull.
