Laura's Loom

Laura's Loom Artisan handweaver based in the Yorkshire Dales, creating beautiful fabrics from locally sourced wool Welcome to Laura's Loom!

I am a handweaver living and working for the past 20 years in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. I work in the lovely market town of Sedbergh which sits at the foot of the Howgill Fells on the Cumbrian border. I design and weave scarves and throws, fabrics for cushions and other interior accessories, and I sell a range of British wool yarns spun from locally sourced fleece. I also produc

e some fabulous and very popular walking socks. I work with spinners, weavers, dyers, knitters and cloth finishers across the north of England and the Scottish Borders to produce my British wool products. I can also be commissioned to weave a wide variety of fabrics by hand on my 8-shaft wooden floor loom. Laura’s Loom celebrates the craft of weaving and Britain’s tremendous woollen heritage. Welcome to my world, come on in, pick up some woolly goodness and be inspired!

In my garden: it’s been another good year for apples (and pears and damsons). While my veg growing skills leave much to be desired (two, yes just two carrots, six corncobs, no courgettes and maybe four tomatoes — I know, technically a fruit — !!), I can at least reap the hard work of the bees and harvest another bumper crop of fruit. Crumble or chutney?

Blanket of the Week: Log Cabin Throw

Shorter and thicker than my usual large bed blankets, these gorgeous throws are perfect for wrapping up outside as the heat of summer begins to cool. They'll keep you toasty warm through a cold winter too.

The throws are woven in a classic 'Log Cabin' design from my thicker Bluefaced Leicester yarns mixed with Suffolk, White-faced Woodland and Hebridean, all raised on farms in and around Sedbergh.

It has been a wonderful summer for the daylilies and Japanese anemones in my garden. They have lasted for weeks this year despite the lack of appreciable rain. A joyous mass of blooms.

Blanket of the Week: Paintbox Baby Blanket.

It’s a little known fact that I make blankets for babies too. These are even machine-washable in a gentle wool cycle.

They are woven from the soft silky fibres of Bluefaced Leicester fleece and finished with a rolled hem so there are no tassels to get in the way.

Wrap your baby in wool, nature’s miracle fibre, with its naturally warm and temperature regulating properties. Wool is also flame resistant, breathable, 100% biodegradable and the ultimate in renewable resources.

Perfect evening for a picnic and a bit of eclipse viewing up on the fell above our house. We tried the colander trick, then the pinhole trick and then we just enjoyed the view as the light noticeably dimmed, the temperature dropped briefly, and the birds began to roost. As for the sheep, they just kept on munching the grass!

I have three of these fab cushions available for sale. They're each approx. 18" square and are sold complete with a wool-filled pad.

Blanket of the Week: Norse Throw

It's hard to accurately describe or show this lovely pure wool throw but, out of all the blankets I’ve made over the years, it is definitely one of my favourites.

The Norse Throw is woven from undyed wool in a large reversible block design with a wide border. It is a substantial size yet light and airy and wonderfully warm.

Look online for more details.
