🌿🐑 Celebrating Wool Month 🧶✨

This month, we’re proud to celebrate one of nature’s most remarkable fibres — wool.

As package yarn dyers, we see the journey of wool up close: from its natural beginnings to beautifully dyed yarns that inspire creativity across fashion, interiors, and textiles. Wool is not only versatile and beautiful, but also renewable, biodegradable, breathable and resilient — a true champion of sustainability.

This is perfectly illustrated by our recent collaboration with Burnfoot wool. Their flock can be seen grazing the hills just beyond our boardroom window — a daily reminder of how the local and the global are woven together in every yarn we dye. It’s a partnership that highlights the connection between land, people and craftsmanship.

Here’s to celebrating wool this month, and every month. 🐑

🧵✨ Yarn dyeing is physics and chemistry in action.

Every time fibres take on a new shade — it’s science in action. The colour we see in textiles depends on how dyes interact with light, specifically within the visible light spectrum (wavelengths between ~380–750 nanometres).

Violet & Blue – absorb longer wavelengths, reflect shorter ones, giving us deep indigos and vibrant violets.
Green & Yellow – mid-range wavelengths that feel balanced and soothing, often linked to natural palettes.
Orange & Red – long wavelengths scatter less, making these yarns look bold and intense, even from afar.

✨ Yarn dyeing isn’t just about colour—it’s an interplay of molecules, light and fibre. As dyers it is our job to select the correct combination of dyes and auxiliary chemicals to create the right combination for colour and fibre interaction, getting the colour right is only one part of the job.

💧♻️ Did you know that at FTS Dyers, every drop of water works twice?

Here’s how our system works:
1️⃣ Water is extracted from the River Esk
(5–15 °C)
2️⃣ Cleaned, filtered & softened
3️⃣ Stored and circulated for machine cooling
4️⃣ This process raises the temperature naturally to 20–25 °C
5️⃣ A heat exchanger then captures residual heat from our effluent tanks
6️⃣ The result: preheated water at 30 °C, ready to start dyeing

✅ Less energy to heat
✅ Smarter use of water
✅ Lower environmental impact

It's a welcome sight to see all the machines loaded. As always we have a wide gamut of colours and fibre types going through. Below is a small selection of Wool, Cotton, Mohair and Polyester that we have dyed since returning from our holidays.

A huge congratulations to our Technical Manager, Alistair Little on receiving his Chartered Colourist status. Received in York on Friday, at the Society of Dyers and Colourists annual day of celebration.

Chartered Colourist status, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of achievement in study of colouration and follows the successful completion of his associateship exams in 2021, the culmination of 14 years work and study. Throughly deserved, well done Alistair.

FTS can now boast three Chartered Colourists who are also qualified with their ASDC, a unique achievement for any current dyehouse in the UK.

It is always a pleasure to work with a customer developing a range of new shades for them.

Step 1 - Measure new colours on the spectrophotometer.

Step 2 - Recipe formulation.

Step 3 - Test the recipe on 5 gram hanks using the Datacolor ahiba.

Step 4 - Carry out the dyeing as requested, 1.5kg of each colour on 36/2 Nm wool.

Step 5 - Wound on to 750 gram PSDP to meet the requirements.

At FTS we pride ourselves that we can meet all your package yarn dyeing needs, be it 5 gram hanks in the lab, 1kg packages for samples or batches of 800kg. We've got in covered.
