Thousands of handmade poppies have been created in Hayle, Cornwall as part of a tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Thousands of handmade poppies have been created in Hayle as part of a tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

The Veterans Charity invited people to join a "poppy production line," using about 6,000 scallop shells to create 2,977 poppies, one for each person killed in the attacks 25 years ago on Friday. The tribute also remembers a Cornishman whose actions are credited with helping save lives on the day.

New to knitting? 🧶 Did you know that Double Knitting (DK) refers to the weight or thickness of the yarn, and it sits within the middle of the yarn-weight scale, between fine 4-ply/fingering and cosy Chunky. The name comes from the idea that DK yarn is approximately twice the thickness of traditional 4-ply yarn 🧶🧶

DK wool offers a lovely balance between warmth, drape and definition, being thick enough to create a warm fabric without becoming overly heavy. It works particularly well for sweaters, cardigans, blankets, textured and cabled patterns 🧶🧶

Woollen or Worsted Spun Yarn – so what’s the difference? 🧶🧶

Woollen Spun yarns are carded so the fibres remain lying in different directions. This traps air, making the yarn lofty, bulky, fluffy, stretchy and warm. It is ideal for hand knitting and for woven tweeds, scarves and blankets.

Worsted spun yarns are carded, then aligned and combed to remove shorter, coarser fibres. The result is a smoother, more even, stronger and denser yarn. When knitting, it creates a more drapey fabric and generally feels softer than a woollen spun yarn.
