Another summer day, another summer wedding…

This lovely guest had a very specific idea of what she wanted. She’d sourced and provided the heavy silk fabric, wanting me to recreate her version of a wrap dress she’d seen online. The sleeves were the standout feature: they needed to be BIG as the original (see last pic of me attempting to adapt the pattern piece).
However, said original was made from a fine lawn cotton and due to the weighty properties of this silk, as hard as I tried, I just couldn’t entirely replicate the original. The fabric was just too thick to gather into the sleeve heads and wrists. Once I explained this, my client totally understood and was delighted with the end result.

The finished article was not a complete copy of the original as the V back and tie detail were entirely her input.

A statement dress is what she wanted and statement dress is what she received.

3 dresses and a jacket…A Very Important wedding commission.

Important simply because these ‘clients’ are like extended family to me; consisting of Bride, Brides Mother and Brides Gran.

Every fibre of my being went into creating the 4 pieces for these lovely people from initial drawings to finished articles.

I convinced them that they wouldn’t regret the use of silk from Beckford Silk. They agreed and I think it shows in the way the garments moved and hung.
The Ostrich feather trim was quite the challenge from initial sourcing to application. It was a gamble which paid off, as real ostrich feather is furiously expensive with no guarantees of correct colour match or the right ply choice. The mild feather shedding was unavoidable but thankfully there was no baldness by the end of the evening.

It’s rare I see my work ‘in action’ but as a guest it was lovely to see how they move and sit on the body.
I did take a wee sewing kit with me ‘just in case’. (Thankfully not required).

A pleasant little distraction from dressmaking:

These outdoor cushion covers were made for another regular local client. She selected this water resistant fabric from UK FABRICS ONLINE which I think is an inspired choice and just that little bit different.
The print complements the beautiful landscape perfectly.

As a nod to tonight’s first episode of the new series of the Sewing Bee I thought I’d showcase my latest commission.

Skirt made for one of my very regular clients who happens to be a lover of Northern soul dancing and vintage style clothing.

This wine coloured silk crepe was purchased from Andree Holden and made into a 180degree midi skirt: perfect for Northern soul twirling. Beautiful vintage buckle sourced to match the green in the print.
And the Sewing Bee beats the pesky footie hands down in my book…

The last prom dress of the season and the poor young lady had to wear it on possibly the hottest day of the year.
Made with 6 metres of heavy duchess satin along with a lined underskirt of 3 tulle layers plus a lining
Lined, interfaced and b***d drum-tight bodice with spaghetti straps and a diamanté trim.
Poor girl🥵

So this lovely lady got married at the weekend…

She wanted a dress inspired by Margaux Hemingway’s original, worn for her own wedding in the early 1970s.

Made in an ivory embroidered wheat ear cotton lawn from Minerva & lined with 2 white lawn cotton under layers for modesty (owing to the sheerness of the fabric).

We adapted the design between us to suit the clients shape and also to avoid slavishly copying the original.
Elements from 3 different patterns were used to create the finished article.

In order to get the fit right and avoid costly mistakes, I initially made a toile (mock up garment) out of curtain lining fabric as it’s similar in weight to her chosen fabric.

…Perfect dress for a quirky bride

It really fills my heart when a client sends me a pic of her dress in action.
This lovely lady requested an off-shoulder fitted bodice/full skirt style for her son’s wedding last week.
Made in a structured silver based brocade from (excellent range/customer service).
Lined with a heavy duchess satin lining, so no boning was required in the bodice to hold the garment in place.
And pockets obvs.

This year has been a big one for occasionwear commissions…hence the lack of posts. They take a long time to produce and I respectfully don’t post until the occasion has passed.

A more elevated version of the Ottoline worker jacket.

Made in a vibrant turquoise cotton mix, in a vain attempt to reduce my bulging fabric stash (didn’t even make a dent).

Because of the open weave nature of the fabric, I interfaced each piece, giving it a good jackety stability.
The pattern is for an unlined jacket but I went ahead and lined it anyway, using a gold brocade duvet cover (??) purchased for a few groats from a charity shop. There was acres of this leftover so my attempt to reduce my fabric pile turned out to be in vain.

Originally wanted white topstitching which I felt looked an arse, so out came the seam ripper and redid in an ochre denim thread.
Coordinates well with the huge gold metal poppers methinks.
Last pic shows the original denim version I made last summer, which I’ve worn over and over. Cost per wear and all that…

Another 1930s style dress in a beautiful retro print from
For a very loyal customer of mine, for whom I made a silk long sleeve version recently.

Original vintage buttons and buckle, with handworked eyelets and belt loops.

A complex, yet easy to follow pattern by . Although it’s an unlined dress pattern I added a full lining, which I feel gives a garment more body and longevity.
