This guitar themed Liberty London print has been patiently waiting since the customer picked it out back in the dark days of lockdown. It was good to put this design together for him: a deep yoke with green piping and curved cuff 😊

As promised, some more photos of Andrew Bristow 's latest Dandy & Rose shirt. This is the first time I have made a western shirt with a plain yoke. I was all for decorating it with appliquΓ© or embroidery, but Andrew reined me in and I am so grateful that he did because I love the results. I have used three different colours of topstitching and added the D&R custom snap to the sleeve placket. The print is of course by Liberty London and the yoke is their plain lawn too. Wishing Andrew many happy returns of the birthday he bought it for, and hoping it appears at many gigs with Miss Jolene & The Jinx !

It has been my privilege to make shirts for Andrew Bristow now for over a decade - in fact he was one of my first customers. This is his latest, made for a special birthday. Andrew is currently puzzling over which of his D&R shirts to wear for an appearance with Miss Jolene & The Jinx this weekend. Head to his page to put your oar in!

Out and about at one of my favourite places, Anne of Cleves House and Museum in my new mushroom dress. High waists are the way forward, I have decided!

I made this shirt for back in 2018. It's been sitting in my to-do pile ever since a mutual friend that Steve had gifted it to because it was too small persuaded me I could reduce it by several sizes to fit him. A couple of years of procrastination later, Steve himself needed the shirt to be a little smaller than his 2018 self had required, so after a quick reduction of the side seams, it's getting ready to head back home to North Carolina. I have always loved this combination of prints, so it has been good to encounter the shirt again, and I am so pleased it will be worn once more. Thank you Steve Johnson !

For some days, I have been working up to having a go at this recently released Mccalls reproduction 70s Laura Ashley pattern. I don't know why it's making me so nostalgic - is it the pintucks or the wacky collar that I can't resist? I have been trying to make the choice between two fabrics in my stash: a crisp, cheerful gingham and Liberty London truly eccentric psychedelic mushrooms print, which I think was called Chantrell. I last worked with it more than a decade ago in a different colourway, for a shirt that ended up as a favourite of Jim Lauderdale .
Anyway... No prizes for guessing that the gingham is back on the stash box πŸ˜‰ Why be crisp and cheerful when you can be psychedelic?
This photo by the great Anthony Scarlatti was one of the earliest of Jim in a Dandy & Rose shirt, and it's still one of my faves.

Thank you Jim Lauderdale for suggesting a "no yoke" style for this shirt, especially since I didn't have enough fabric for a western shirt and had already made this. Now that's what I call intuition! πŸ˜€ This Liberty London print is so glorious: it's called "Survival" and if you look carefully at the design, you will see endangered animals making their way through the William Morris style print. I found the perfect vintage glass buttons and I love the results. It's the first D & R shirt I have made with my new Bernina 570 and o my goodness, she made the process so much easier!

I have finished my first project with my new sewing machine! She runs like a dream, as they say, and we're calling her Beattie Bernina, after my Grandma's Aspley. Beattie appears in the 1911 census as a tailor's apprentice in Dorchester. A decade later, she married my Grandad and moved to the Midlands, where she put her sewing skills to use to earn a few extra pennies for the family, then when my Mum Iris married her son Wilf in 1944, she taught her to make do and mend, and together they clothed my brothers. I feel privileged not only to be the heir to these family skills, and to hand them on to the next generation, but to live in an era where I get to use beautiful fabrics and own a fancy sewing machine.

So it's only fitting that the first project Beattie and I have made together is this 1940s reproduction blouse. The fabric is Liberty tana lawn from my stash and the buttons are from Beattie's button box.

This will come in handy for the forthcoming 80th anniversary of VE Day celebrations in Lewes, for which "1940s dress is encouraged" - as if encouragement were necessary! 😊😊😊
