The Lewisian gneiss of the northwest of Scotland comprises some of the oldest rock in Europe, with some portions dating back 3 billion years. Also known as the Lewisian complex, this suite of Precambrian metamorphic rock offers a portal-like glimpse into the Earth's deep past.
