A drawing of Jan Mayen and Mount Beerenberg seen from the northwest by Johannes van Keulen in 1728. Jan Mayen was named after Dutch sailor Jan Jacobszoon May van Schellinkhout, who came upon the island during a prospecting expedition in the early 17th century. Around that time the island had reputedly been stumbled upon by several other expeditions from other European countries, all of whom had given it their own names.
