Book Week is usually quite a creative week in our house. Usually I can cobble something together from my stash but this time something very particular was requested.

With 2 days in hand, I managed to make this from the ‘Secret Garden’ and voila, Mary Lennox.

Here is a short explanation on why not all vintage patterns are the same and what to look for when you are starting out on a vintage pattern journey.

I do have a slight cold…. So apologies for that… but I did work out how to caption!

You never know what’s going to happen when you buy something online. As a birthday treat, my client is going to a regency ball but the gown didn’t sit right in her bust. So, we put a panel in.

It was up cycling at its best as the panel was an off it from a curtain! We chose it because it was exactly the colour we needed and blended in well with the dress. It also needed to be hemmed but that’s magic I won’t reveal!

Add some gross grain ribbons, and we are off to the ball!

Some formal dresses are slinky and some just have the wow factor. This is certainly a wow factor dress and with 4 layers I had to spend most of my time on the floor pinning and measuring.
I was so happy with the results and my client had a great time!

I love working on designer dresses! This one was too big, so I took in the back and made an extra pleat. Then moved one of the flowers from the front to the back.
My client loved it!

Another red carpet alteration, I loved the dress as well but I agreed with my clients that if we got rid of the sleeves it would make more impact because of her fantastic shoulders.

I loved the sheer bodice and the way that it was ‘sport lux’ meets glamour.

I love trying new things. Can I fix a sparkle coat and put a new lining in? Of course!

Then you get started - fast fashion is just that fashion in a hurry which means fixing some of the giant sequins, a lining that was just a piece of netting and some interesting bias binding. So, new bias binding, new satin lining and voila! A great looking coat! Thanks loving your glasswork at the moment!

What if you had a dress that your mum had made but you really didn't like the 80's styling and wanted to upgrade it?
This is what my friend Catherine and I came up with when we altered and restyled her old bridesmaids dress but kept the original quilting work done by her mum.
A little patch under the arms make it a bit more comfy and we now have a useable dress!

This is a Norman Hartnell dress from the 1960’s. If you’re not familiar with him, he designed all Queen Elizabeth’s 1950’s dresses.

It’s unusual in the way that it has a detachable skirt. I loved stitching this in a cupro fabric which is very soft and gives a great drape to the pleat.

Thanks to for the fabric advice!
