I'm so excited to be teaching at Alexandra Waylett at Marks Tey near Colchester on 27th and 28th October 2025. This is an exciting variation on my Shibori teaching as we are going to be working with coloured Dylan dyes rather than indigo. This is going to give us the opportunity to overdue pieces and get some interesting colour variations... I can't wait to get some practice in at my studios over the next few weeks! If you can, please join me and please pass on this post to anyone who you think might be interested. https://alexandrawaylett.com/product/exploring-the-shibori-circle-in-colour-with-rob-jones-new-2025/

Morning everyone! I'm Rob from and I'm taking part in with this week. I am a Japanese textiles designer and teacher working with ancient Japanese textiles crafts, mainly Shibori resist dyeing with indigo. I also use Katagami stencils with rice paste resist as shown in this scarf. I love a bit of Japanese embroidery and mending too as it helps to calm and focus me. I work with several types of Sashiko stitching: Moyozashi (pattern) Sashiko where the stitches never touch; Hitomezashi (one stitch) Sashiko stitched to a grid and making joined up patterns; and Kogin counted thread Sashiko stitched on an Evenweave fabric. I also take inspiration from vintage Japanese fabrics for Boro inspired mending. You may have seen some of my Sashiko and Boro mending on the semi-final of this years on the conversion challenge where the contestants had to do some hand stitch patch mending. I teach all these techniques online and at my studio in Muswell Hill, at on Broadway Market and further afield at and occasionally at too. This week I'm taking part in Indie Week and you can meet me in person at in Brighton on 25/26 November with If you can, please support me and my fellow makers during these difficult times. If you can't buy please follow me and like and share my posts. Thank you

Cherry blossom Moyozashi Sashiko in blue. This is from a Seweasy template where you draw on the stitches so theoretically easy! However, you still have to be careful the template doesn't move when you are marking up and with your stitching. If you want to try this, I'm running a class at Fabrications on Broadway Market tomorrow (Tuesday 11th October) evening. Class starts at 18.30. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/sashiko-stitching-workshop-tickets-393608703227

I rarely post selfies but I love this new Shibori scarf so much that I had to show you with me wearing it! The process is quite involved as there is marking up and stitching of many rows of stitch to pull up and make perfect concertina folded pleats at both ends. I've then applied a variety of whip stitches through both sides and all layers of the scarf at different points. It's then had 10 dips in the indigo to get the lovely deep blue. I've only got one of this scarf and it will be available to buy at our Muswell Hill Creatives Autumn fair this Saturday (1st October) from 10.30 to 5 in Central Muswell Hill outside the Everyman Cinema. Please drop by and support us all if you can. Thanks, Rob

Here are a few of the hundreds of patterns you can make with stitched and bound Shibori. First pic clockwise from top - Karamatsu (larch pattern), Makiage, zigzag nui stitch, sector nui stitch, Guntai and, in the centre, the Mokume (wood grain) pattern. Second pic shows types of Boshi (capping) where white space is created using plastic capped areas.
