1 in 10 parents are putting school uniform on a credit card or buy-now-pay-later… Just to get their kids ready for September.

That’s the headline from new research from Money Wellness [tag], and it sits alongside another number that matters just as much: nearly half of parents don’t know the uniform rules are changing at all. From this September, most schools in England can only require three branded items (four if there’s a tie), a rule that exists specifically to stop families being locked into expensive, single-supplier kit.

But a rule only helps if people know it’s there… and so does a second-hand option, whilst we’re talking about this. Talk to your school about their pre-loved options, and if they don’t yet have a Uniformd store, we’d love to welcome them on board.

The Met Office has issued heat warnings with temperatures forecast to hit 38°C this week, and schools across the UK are already relaxing uniform rules in response - in fact, the government published updated guidance yesterday encouraging them to do exactly that.

Here’s what parents need to know about school uniform and heatwaves this week 👇

☀️ Check what your school actually allows:
Many schools have a heat policy, but it’s rarely communicated proactively. Most schools have relaxed their rules this week, so check the website or app, or drop them a message
☀️ Lighter doesn’t always mean less -
Polo shirts > shirts, cotton > polyester, summer dresses where permitted - small swaps make a real difference to how a child feels by 2pm in 35°C heat.
☀️ Buy second-hand for what’s left of the week.
Summer-weight uniform gets worn for a matter of weeks. Paying full price for a new item right now makes very little sense - preloved is the faster and cheaper call.
☀️ If you can’t find the right thing, size up.
A slightly larger fit in a breathable fabric will always beat a snug one in the wrong material. Comfort over perfection this week.

If you’re a parent, this one’s worth paying attention to… 👀

The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act has finally responded to what parents have been requesting for years, and from September, the rules around school uniforms are actually changing in law. (Not just guidance!)

Here’s what’s changing:
👉 Schools can only require max 3 branded uniform items (excluding ties), no more 12-piece crested lists
👉 Uniform policies must be easy to understand & publicly available, even for prospective parents choosing a school
👉 Schools must prioritise value for money, quality, durability, sustainability, and move away from single-supplier contracts
👉 Second-hand uniform options must be actively promoted and easy to find for ALL parents, current and prospective
