The Sunspel Boxer Short

The Sunspel Boxer Short may have been immortalised in pop culture by Nick Kamen, but its story began decades earlier.

In 1947, John Hill, great-grandson of Sunspel’s founder, discovered the boxer short while honeymooning in America and brought the style back to Britain, refining the design with comfort in mind.

Thirty-eight years later, it would find its place in pop culture history and become a Sunspel icon.

When first putting together our new collection, we found ourselves drawn to the British countryside in all its autumnal richness. The burnt reds of falling leaves and movement of the landscape captured by artists like Sybil Andrews were elements we knew we wanted to weave into this season’s knitwear.

Fall of the Leaf captured the spirit we set out to achieve. Its attention to shape and silhouette echoed the fabrics and cut of our Shetland jumpers, while Andrews’ technique resonated with our own hands-on approach to craftsmanship.

The Riviera Polo Shirt

When Peter Hill, great-grandson of Sunspel’s founder, travelled to the French Riviera in the 1950s, he found himself without a wardrobe suited to the Mediterranean heat.

So he set out to create one.

The Riviera Polo Shirt was born from that idea. At its heart is a lightweight Supima cotton mesh, developed exclusively for Sunspel to be exceptionally soft and breathable. More than 70 years later, that distinctive fabric remains at the heart of one of our most iconic designs.
