Our Grandma suffered with Raynaud’s and poor circulation until we learned how to keep her hands warm without bulky gloves.
Back then, she’d warm her hands in front of an open fire or with a hot water bottle.
Because if they got a tiny bit cold, the impact was severe.
Her fingers would turn white and become useless.
She could no longer do simple things like:
- Holding a pen to write
- Using her phone
- Turning the key in her front door
…not to mention the acute pain and horrible tingling sensation in her fingers.
Every winter she endured this without complaint.
But seeing this proud woman so helpless was heartbreaking.
Our mother (who loves sewing) was determined to find a solution.
After doing some research, she made a pair of fingerless gloves out of an old sweater.
Not just any old sweater though.
It was made from Cashmere.
Well known for its unrivalled softness and insulation.
The snug, comfy fit kept Grandma’s wrists and the back of her hands warm and insulated.
Which is where a lot of heat escapes through veins close to the skin’s surface.
Whilst her fingers were free to carry out all the normal tasks she wanted to do.
Grandma was thrilled with her fingerless gloves because they:
- Kept her hands lovely and warm
- Eased her carpal aches and pains
- Reduced the effects of Raynaud’s (no more white fingers or horrible tingling sensation)
…all without restricting her ability to use her hands.
They worked so well she never took them off.
Even in the summer months!
Word got out so we started making them for all the family lining up to try ‘Grandma’s Cashmere Gloves’.
We sourced Cashmere jumpers from charity shops.
But still, it was incredibly expensive.
After endless research we found contacts that could get access to leftover Cashmere at wholesale prices that was headed for landfills.
