A Natural dye session during the 100 Years Celebration conference, with next level dyer Anna Willoughby of the .
Beyond the unbelievable range of colours that Anna is able to bring forth from her plants, she also takes a Biodynamic approach to the work, recognising the significance of place, planets, and elements in the day to day dye decisions. I was really moved by her work 🪐🌗☀️❄️💧
The blue we achieved using woad, Europes answer to indigo. Grown Biodynamically on site, as part of an 8 year BD rotation. It takes more science than I understand to make a good indigo vat like Anna’s, but I’m excited to try with the recent discovery of indigofera in the garden!!

Last weekend the Ruskin Mill Trust and the Biodynamic Association hosted a 100 Years of Biodynamics celebratory conference. An inspiring and festive weekend of talks, workshops and music held up at the Ruskin Mill Wool Barn.

I learned a lot about the history of this extraordinary regenerative agricultural method, how it came to be and where it’s at now. As Ruth Alice Rands, the founder of Herd, put it to me so simply during a conversation recently, ‘biodynamic agriculture is the apex of regenerative farming’ and I think she describes it perfectly.

Happy 100 years BD Ag 🥳
I hope I can contribute to the next 100 years of action!

I was thrilled to discover some sneaky dye plants in my mother’s garden this weekend!
1- Ladies bedstraw (similar to madder, more orangey reds)
2- True indigo ( blues )
3- Wild Garlic ( not a dye plant, i just wanted to make the folks of hackney jealous) 🤭
Did you know you can eat the capers of the wild garlic too? I haven’t tried it yet, worth the effort?

Over the past year I’ve let Fine Tilth work grind to a pause (hopefully not halt) because of an unexpected challenge to my physical health, which can’t be fixed over night unfortunately.
Before I got poorly I had a whole capsule collection of ideas ready to bring to life and I was really excited to work on it! But it takes a lot of time and energy to develop clothes well, even more so when committed to working in an earth friendly way! Right now I just don’t have many beans to spare, so my life has been downscaled to something a bit slower in the countryside until I’m better. I’m still flexing those creative muscles though, with personal projects like this knit! My first knit since school I think! I used a pattern from but I had to jump up a size because my gauge wasn’t matching the gauge listed. I also had to experiment different ways of working alternate colour rows without messing up the pattern directions. Not as simple as it might sound, if you knit you’ll know!
Knitted with biodynamic Llynn wool (cream) mixed with another local self coloured yarn (brown).
I’m gonna try and enjoy wearing it 😄

🐑I had the pleasure of writing a little something for farming magazine Star&Furrow!
It’s such a pleasure to be working on a freelance project with that so perfectly reflects my areas of life joy - fashion and healthy farming! 👩🏾‍🌾

The goal of the project is to set up the first Biodynamic wool supply network for the fashion industry, exciting! The project is commissioned by .charity ~ turning fashion into a climate solution.

Btw- If you know a farmer or designer who you think would like to be involved in this project do let me know, we’re keen to evaluate the general enthusiasm for it🐑

thanks to and for helping pave the way for others with your work!

🤍 Here is one of my fave pics of Barbara, I can’t remember what made her laugh but I love the moment captured!
She’s wearing a sample of a shirt I’m still working on. (not yet available, I’m working on a full look launch for the new academic year 🤞🏽)

Barbara is also wearing jeans from her own brand .

So the balcony flax is.. quite short 😅 Good job I only planted a tiny morsel! just a taster, to get to know the plant a bit better ahead of future endeavours.

I don’t think they love being in a window box, not enough room to spread roots and grow tall I guess.

However the are still very pretty blowing around in the wind all day in their little blue skirts.

The smallest textile garden in London is progressing nicely ………..🌱………..🌱…………🌱
Everything feels quite behind because of the cold spring, but hopefully growth speeds up from here on!

It was a real major pleasure to chat to Sophie all about her work, my work, about being bi racial, and tall with big hair, and having super beautiful sighthounds 😄 twinning a little bit on those fronts!
For concentration consideration I won’t share our whole chat with you but I’ve pulled some snippets of Sophie facts for you to enjoy this weekend!

Sophie Sellu of Grain and Knot is pictured here in her studio wearing the Fine Tilth Thea shirt in Granite linen.
