Celine was founded by Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard in 1945 as a made-to-measure children’s shoe boutique that was located at 52 rue Malte. Finding success, the duo expanded and opened three more stores by 1948. More than a decade later, Vipiana used her success as a launch pad to branch out into ready-to-wear, with the goal to deliver fashion to the everyday woman. On a platform that advocated for practical clothing over frivolity, she launched a sportswear-driven line that revolved around wool skirt suits, fitted shirts, leather vests, and pastel-colored denim.

In 1963, she unveiled a women’s shoe line and a year later introduced Vent Fou, the brand’s first fragrance that featured notes of galbanum, jasmine, and rose. Vipiana added leather accessories in 1966, including bags, belts, and gloves. In her mission to deliver pieces of the highest caliber, she sought out a leather goods factory in Florence.

Vipiana remained the designer of Celine until she died in 1997 at 84 years old.
Over the many years designers put their signature style on the brand but no one did it like Phoebe Philo. She was the savior of Celine, having plucked the brand from obscurity and making it relevant through her incredibly chic and minimalist take on Vipiana’s original aesthetic. For her first collection, during the Spring 2010 season, she showed clothing that women aspired to wear: precise lines, and sharp tailoring that juxtaposed with fluid shapes, all rendered in a rigid color palette of neutrals. And Philo stuck with it all through her 10 years at the helm.

She also launched a slew of now-iconic bags (the Trapeze, Classic, Luggage, Cabas styles). While we all know and love the Celine of today—a wonderfully minimalist, no-fuss aesthetic that resonates with the modern-day working woman—it wasn’t always that way for the 73-year-old French brand.

The Kelly, a long-revered Hermès atelier style, is the epitome of ladylike elegance.

Originally known as the Sac à Dépêches, it was designed in 1930 by Hermès CEO Robert Dumas as a refined take on the larger saddlebags of the brand’s equestrian heritage.
A clean-cut trapezium shape with practical straps, its design was as discreet as it was chic – something which whispered luxury, rather than shouted it.

Dumas’ Sac à Dépêches was a popular style for the brand, but it wasn’t until 25 years later that its true star potential was realised. Whilst working on the Hitchcock classic To Catch a Thief in 1954, the actress Grace Kelly was given a Sac à Dépêches to wear as part of her character’s wardrobe. Grace loved the bag so much that, once the film wrapped, she continued to carry it with her off set.
It was one of the last films she would make – two years later, at the age of 26, Grace made the historic move from Hollywood ingénue to Princess of Monaco during a fairytale wedding to Prince Rainier III, watched on live television by over 30 million people. After their nuptials, newly pregnant with her first daughter, Grace turned to her trusted Sac à Dépêches to help shield her growing baby bump from the waiting paparazzi. With Grace looking typically glamorous in a sumptuous coat, white gloves and sunglasses, the image appeared in magazines around the world – and the newly crowned ‘Kelly’ bag was thrust into the spotlight with it. Ever since, Hermès officially renamed the Sac à Dépêches as the Kelly in 1977.

The construction of the KELLY is a thing of astonishing perfection. Each bag takes an Hermès artisan around 18 to 20 hours to complete from start to finish, with 680 stitches securing 36 separate pieces of leather. For an extra flourish, a maker will sometimes even iron the bag to ensure a smooth surface, before it is carefully inspected for any faults.

For decades leather artisans all over the world would create their take on the Kelly Bag.

“With four pairs of shoes, I can travel the world", said Gabrielle Chanel.

In 1937, almost 20 years before their official launch, the famous cap toe, two tone shoes had already appeared on Coco Chanel's feet, in a signature black and white silhouette, pictured here with the Ballets Russes star Serge Lifar, whom she befriended after meeting him in 1924, on the set of Train Bleu.

With a special attention to detail, Gabrielle Chanel designed the shoes in beige, to elongate their shape, and black, to shorten the foot and protect the toe from long-term wear. A new ally of women's fashion, the 5cm heel ensured stability and perfect comfort.

Even today, Chanel creates these two-tone objects of desire alongside the shoemaker Massaro. From his arrival at the head of the house in 1983, Karl Lagerfeld immortalized the shoes with their savoir-faire, never ceasing to reinvent them, notably in the form of ballerina pumps in 1986, now a cult item, and as sandals, boots, Oxfords, and espadrilles, released in a wide color palette.

At Marveilles Vintage we have available fabulous pair of black Chanel Gabrielle, cap toe high heel pumps from the late 80’s!

Stay tuned!
