Nigeria's security challenges have been a burning issue over the past few decades but it took a deadly turn last year, partly due to the inertia of government at all levels, whose primary goal is to protect lives and properties. It became a thing of embarrassment when kidnappers, arsonists, and terrorists grew emboldened to the point where they held celebratory live sessions on TikTok after receiving ransom.
As insecurity intensified, public confidence weakened further. This has resulted in people avoiding road travel, farmers abandoning their farms, parents fearing daily school runs, and communities limiting movement after dark.
To cope with this reality, my colleague and I developed FamGuard, a free mobile app developed by AceHub Technologies Ltd to support family safety through emergency alerts and incident updates.
How FamGuard Works
Once a user registers, they can invite trusted family members and friends into their private safety circle. These trusted contacts can see shared locations and will get notified when a user hits the emergency button.
Key Features
Trusted Safety Circles
Users create a private group made up of family members and close friends. Only people in this circle can receive your safety alerts and view shared locations.
Safety Alerts
With a single action, users can send an alert to their safety circle when they feel unsafe or need help. Alerts notify contacts immediately and include the user’s current location so assistance can be coordinated quickly.
Live Location Sharing
FamGuard allows users to share their location with trusted contacts during daily routines, travel, or specific time periods. Location sharing can be started and stopped by the user at any time.
Check Ins
Users can send check-ins to confirm they have arrived safely or are okay. Check-ins can be sent on demand or scheduled for common activities such as school runs, commutes, or visits.
Incident Reporting
FamGuard allows users to report safety concerns within their area. Once these reports are sent, FamGuard users within 15 - 20 miles will be alerted. Incident reports can be sent anonymously and only include basic details to help other users nearby be aware of the danger within the community.
Offline Support
Essential safety tools remain available even when mobile data is limited or network coverage is weak. Users can still access maps and safety functions under constrained conditions.
Privacy and Control
Users decide who can see their location and receive alerts. All sharing settings are managed within the app, giving families clarity and control over how information is used.
