"As a policeman, I've worked fairly high crime areas in the suburbs adjacent to the north side of St Louis city, Missouri.
Unlicensed drivers, drugs, stolen guns & cars are common enough to look for.

I stopped people for broken taillights, plate lights, turn signals; any minor vehicle infraction to stop the driver.

If the driver was legit, I'd mostly inform them if the issue and let them off with a warning. That nice officer saved me $100 by telling me how to fix a $2 bulb!

On the other hand, I've gotten felons with illegal fi****ms, drugs, felony warrants and stolen cars from a simple broken bulb. The short of it, to cover my rear, when arresting someone from a traffic stop, I ALWAYS wrote a citation for the probable cause used to stop the vehicle. While never experienced firsthand, I was told that this will stop a lawyer from saying that I lied up a reason to stop the vehicle.

So in closing, yes cops write a LOT of tail light tickets, but stop more people for it."
