The Moment with the Merchants - Part 3

Three of us at the BFI IMAX for The Odyssey. Booked a year in advance, worth every day of the wait. Best cinema in London.

Most of what I deal in was made decades before this film existed, but it all comes from the same place… a love of the big screen.

Busy few weeks here at The Moment. New content coming this week! Just incase you’re missing me …

What do you want to know about posters?

I’ve been answering some brilliant questions from collectors lately and turning it into content… provenance, condition, what actually makes something a poster valuable…

Your turn. Drop a question below or DM me … it might be the next one I answer on here!

Everyone knows the face. Almost no one knows she designed it.

Marilyn would have turned 100 this year - the poses, the lighting, the whole “Marilyn” were never accidents. And that face still sells a room before you’ve read a word, which is why her film posters are among the most collectable pieces of the 20th century.

The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - instantly readable from across a hall, still wanted on walls seventy years on.

Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait is at until 6 September.
I’ve a few original Marilyn pieces in the collection right now. If one belongs in your space, DM me or tap the link in bio…

What to look out for when buying original vintage posters?

Three original US one sheets for Bullitt from 1968 - Steve McQueen at his coolest. The same poster in three very different conditions, and that difference is everything.

The first has UV damage. Years of sunlight have faded the inks, and once colour goes that way it’s gone for good. UV is the single biggest red flag there is - avoid it above all else.

The second has been restored. Skilled work can bring a poster back, but it should always be disclosed. Collectors want as much of the original poster as possible, so too much restoration can drag the value down - except on the rarest pieces.

The third has only the lightest touch-ups along the fold lines, and as one sheets were issued folded, that’s exactly as it should be. Excellent condition, about as close to original as you’ll find.

For investment, always buy the best you can find: a clean piece, or one linen-backed with only minor work to the folds. Watch for paper loss, tears and blemishes - they all pull against value. The best is what holds and grows over time, and it’s what we always aim to sell.

How do we ship our vintage posters around the world?

Rolled pieces: protective plastic sleeve, bubble wrap at both ends of the tube to eliminate any movement, and fragile tape on the outside…

Folded pieces: shipped flat-packed, always. Some posters were issued folded - and we ship them the way they were meant to be handled…

Wherever you are, it arrives ready for the wall or your collection.
