London is extraordinarily hot but surprisingly we have been very busy and wonder if word has got out that we are the coolest shop in Jermyn Street!

Our curved shop front, oak stairs and shelves were all made by hand by carpenters I knew in Wiltshire. I visited throughout and watched our shop materialise and remember so well the bizarre sight of the shop front standing completed and unpainted in the middle of their work room.

Born in the quiet countryside, relocated 27 years ago into the heart of London, dressed anew for each season and posing for so many dining on the terrace of our favourite Franco's opposite, those Wiltshire carpenters have done us proud.

Ever since I began selling shirts in the 1980’s pale pink has been a very popular colour in the UK, but my American customers dressing for business in Wall Street were more wary and preferred white and blue. However men have been enjoying dressing in pink since the mid 18th century, considered a masculine colour, blue for boys and pink for girls a relatively recent idea.⁠

Now pink is one of our most loved colours for all seasons, in cotton, linen and brushed cotton, an uplifting contrast to the dark suit colours, in the Summer marrying beautifully with white and natural linen colours and for casual Winter dressing with grey flannels or all shades of browns.⁠

Customers often ask what will suit their colouring, or we might give our suggestions as part of the choice when looking at shirts. A pale pink, rather than strong or bright, is flattering on almost all colouring, dark, blonde, red or grey hair and although almost every colour looks wonderful on those lucky enough to have olive skin, even the palest of skin tones can can wear this gentle colour.⁠

‘In the Pink’ means being in peak physical health and excellent spirits and I also read that psychologically pink evokes feelings of care and compassion, as well as lowering the heart rate and reducing aggressive behaviour, so perhaps having a pink shirt in your armor could serve many purposes!

There is associated pressure on both sides for bride groom and shirtmaker, to perfect the shirt for The Day, and this one edged nerve wrackingly close to the finishing line for us both. I am more than happy with the final result , kindly sent to me by the groom Andrew and I couldn’t have enjoyed the many bespoke appointments more with this great couple …‘ Andrew Emma’s shirt fits perfectly, ( when it definitely didn’t yet) , it’s your body that’s the problem.’ Laughter.
