Towards the end of 2025, I was reminded of the term Cause & Effect, which triggered a thought process of trying to understand whether everything can be categorised under this title, especially when it comes to making, creating and designing. Are the causes the notes we make, the collection of images, the inspiring thoughts that stick with us? Is the effect the work and output that comes from these?
The process of Second Best is very much collecting bread crumbs, arranging and reflecting, then making. So simply put, Cause & Effect.

Shortly after being reminded of the term I left London to spend some time in my rural home village in Northumberland. Still mulling C&E over the first change in my immediate environment that struck me was the cause of man made structure & the effect on nature’s landscape. A tree stands in-front of a building, very much standing alone in creation but forced to join a composition. This trickled into the new collection, mixing rigid lines with organically shaped detailing. I didn’t want to be literal. The motive was simply to mix rigid and soft through garments and see where the successful tension landed. I feel this is a subconscious consistent of clothing design. The Slatted trouser remains as a harder more geometric base with the organic forms reserved for the torso. Fabric weights and wax vary the volume and the way pieces either stack or drape.
