TO CATCH A THIEF — BUT WHICH ONE CAME FIRST? 👀
We’ve just acquired two gorgeous original French Grandes for Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief (1955), both featuring Boris Grinsson’s fabulous artwork of Cary Grant & Grace Kelly against the French Riviera.
At first glance, they look almost identical. But look a little closer…
One is the Affiches et Publicité printing, which appears to have made up the main body of posters distributed to French cinemas from late 1955 and into 1956.
The other is the ULTRA-RARE Cinemato printing, the earliest French printing from 1955.
And interestingly, most people assume the Affiches et Publicité version came first!
Filmed on location along the French Riviera, To Catch a Thief is surely one of the most stylish films ever made. Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Edith Head’s unforgettable costumes, Hitchcock and that spectacular Mediterranean backdrop. ✨
The film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, and Grinsson’s artwork captures that golden-age Hollywood glamour perfectly.
