‘Lyall is such a brilliant mentor, he has helped steer our business from foggy plains to clearer skies, with a mixture of both advise on construction of garments, to how best to create a budget for a project, being a young designer this advice and mentorship was crucial in putting us the place we are now! Lyall Hakaraia has a extraordinary understanding of historical, contextual and social impacts of fashion design as well as a diverse range of technical skills that allow him to explore innovations in fabrics, garment manufacture and finishings through his own work. He is both a mentor and a teacher - using the classic couture atelier model to create a nurturing environment in which his students are able to learn everything from the basics of pattern cutting and manufacture through to exquisite beading and hand finishing. He had an enormous impact on my life and is someone I hold in great esteem as an innovator and an influencer for change in the fashion industry.
