In 1987, Chanel famously celebrated the launch of the No. 5 Eau de Parfum and Karl Lagerfeld designed oversized accessories honoring the house’s fragrance heritage, including the belts featuring the iconic “No. 5” perfume bottle motif. This Chanel perfume belt is from the original 1987 collection. The belt was also featured in the 1987 ad campaign where it was worn by Chanel muse, Ines de la Fressange. Lagerfeld went on to showcase variations of this belt on the runway during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Crafted from 24ct gold plated metal curb chains, two conjoined chains circle the waist. Three further chains loop down and hang over the waist. It is finished with a weighty perfume bottle charm which reads “Coco Chanel”.

This maxi gown was designed as part of Christian Lacroix’s Spring 2006 collection. Patchwork prints were a recurring theme and garments appeared to be constructed from an eclectic mix of textiles, most likely designed by Lacroix himself. A near-identical version of this dress appeared on the runway, in an alternative arrangement of striped silks.

This piece is cut from sheer silk chiffon printed with a faux patchwork effect, creating the illusion of assembled scarves. Panels in warm tones of orange, terracotta, lilac, and pale pink sit alongside sections of white, soft brown, and deep chocolate. Elsewhere, teal meets burnt orange, while forest green clashes with candy pink. The tailoring is billowing, with the chiffon cascading around the body as the model walks.

A dramatic documented piece from Julien Macdonald’s Spring 2013 collection, this striking silk cape perfectly captures the sensual glamour that defined the season. Inspired by Sharon Stone’s character in Basic Instinct, the cape was styled over a high-cut bodysuit, where it billowed dramatically behind the model.

Expertly crafted from lightweight, semi-sheer silk crepe, the cape features hand-dyed graduated horizontal panels that fade from deep black into a soft peach-blush pink. The generous cut creates an elegant, enveloping silhouette, while the hem is subtly shaped to fall shorter at the front before sweeping dramatically to floor length at the back.

This versatile piece can be worn comfortably across sizes XXS to XXL, making it an adaptable garment equally suited to styling over eveningwear or body-con silhouettes.

This Christian Dior turquoise silk-chiffon maxi dress walked the runway as part of the brand’s Resort 2009 collection. Created during John Galliano’s tenure at the helm of the fashion house, this vibrant gown is tailored to a strapless cut, the chiffon cascading in an empire silhouette from under the bust to the floor. The skirt is composed of two layers of softly pleated chiffon and a final layer of matte turquoise silk.

The bust is crafted from silk taffeta and split at the front. It is adorned with elaborate beadwork: square fuchsia sequins, tonal turquoise beads, translucent yellow beads, rhinestones and mirrored gold beads, and gatherings of turquoise diamond-shaped sequins. The top is lined with a tonal turquoise mesh corset that is b***d and wired around the bust.  A floppy chiffon bow ties just below the bust.

This archival top and skirt ensemble walked the runway on supermodel Claudia Schiffer as part of Valentino’s Fall 1996 collection. Tailored from lilac satin and chiffon, the top is cut to a sleeveless style with an elegant, wide slash-neck. Elaborate tonal embroidery and ribbon work cover it, creating floral patterns, climbing vines and sweeping curves that recall the Art Nouveau decorative style. The coordinating skirt is tailored to an ankle-grazing maxi-length from tonal purple silk crepe.

This original 1970s yellow gold-tone chainmail neckerchief was made by Whiting & Davis during the height of the disco period. Founded in America in 1876, Whiting & Davis is best known for inventing metallic chainmail mesh. Although the company closed its doors in 1991, it remains one of the most celebrated names in chainmail accessories, as the quality was unrivalled.

Cut to a striking triangular bib shape, it sits at the neck like a Western-style neckerchief. The pre-1976 Whiting & Davis maker’s mark is stamped on the teardrop-shaped cartouche at the end of the adjustable fastening chain, along with “Made in USA.”

This ethereal chiffon dress and matching cover-up walked the runway as look 11 of Julien Macdonald’s Spring 2011 runway collection. Reviewing the show, Vogue noted “the florals on some of the sheer, lacy, bedroom-glamour dresses came from vintage twenties frocks”.

The dress is cut from pale cream silk chiffon. Soft ruffled chiffon panels cascade from the skirt, becoming longer towards the back to create an asymmetric waterfall effect. The front is embellished with intricate bronze, pewter and gold beadwork interspersed with featherlight, leaf-shaped chiffon appliqués.

The accompanying cover-up is cut from matching cream silk chiffon and follows the runway styling. It is generously cut to float around the body, with cascading ruffled chiffon panels and a dramatic asymmetric hem that sweeps the floor.

This dress was designed by Erdem and walked the runway for Spring 2010 as look 7. Vogue wrote, “Looking at almost any piece in Erdem Moralioglu’s Spring/Summer collection is to be drawn into a world of surreally intense color and decoration.” Cut from cotton with a vibrant digital print in fuchsia, aquamarine, pistachio green and royal blue, the dress is tailored to a classic sheath silhouette. The softly tulip-shaped skirt is lined in matching printed cotton, with the lining cut slightly longer so that it peeks out beneath the hem.

This dress was designed by Zac Posen and walked the runway as look 17 of the American designer’s Spring 2006 collection. The Vogue review stated, “Summery whites, some in the season’s must-have eyelet, were hits.” This timeless fit-and-flare dress is tailored from a textured linen-blend fabric woven with subtle tonal satin stripes. Strips of appliquéd linen frame embroidered cutwork eyelets, which are repeated across the bust, back and within the folds of the skirt.
