Repurposing a wedding dress to make something new is always one of my favourite things to do, so when I was contacted about making a gown for a double christening last year, I jumped at the chance.
Samantha had beautiful 6 month old twin girls and already had one gown that had previously been made by a family member on her husband’s side for baby F to wear. She liked the idea of repurposing her own mums wedding dress to make a gown for baby D, which would also mean they would have 2 heirloom pieces to hand down to future generations.
Her mums wedding dress was made of a cream embroidered satin which had plenty of fabric to repurpose once unpicked and pressed. Using the existing christening gown as inspiration, I came up with a design that coordinated well with its simple style and that would also use the best elements of the wedding dress including the scalloped hem detail of the original skirt.
The gown was completed using scalloped embroidered organza trim from my vintage collection, along with little button loops and satin covered buttons to match. There was also enough satin left over to make 2 pocket squares that could be given to family members as mementos.
I always enjoy working on little dresses and Samantha (and baby D and F who very handily could stand in for each other at fittings!), were such a pleasure to work with. Here are a few kind words that Samantha had to say… ❤️
“We had so many compliments at the christening yesterday…thank you for making SUCH a special dress for D!”
