Serenely greeting Spring ...

Filigrana Love Knot in White, Blue, Yellow and Red Palette, Abstract Art Glass Sculpture, 1980s-90s

This beautiful work of Modernist art glass has been crafted using the Murano technique of Filigrana and has been shaped into the form commonly known as the 'Love Knot'. The association of knots with the symbolism of love, friendship and affection dates back to antiquity.

The technique Filigrana (Literal translation 'Filigree glass' in Italian) often features white coloured canes but sometimes multicolour too, as it is in this instance. The Filigrana style originated on the island of Murano in the 16th century and spread rapidly to other parts of Europe where façon de Venise glass was produced. Manufacture on Murano continued until the 18th century, and it was revived in the 20th century.

Though the Filigrana technique can be in applied using multicoloured canes, it has not been possible to trace another example of Filigrana applied into the Love Knot form. There are a few inclusions (bubbles) in the creation of this piece but despite this, the overall ex*****on of the piece is beautifully balanced and an excellent canvas for light refraction. The colour palette bears a vibrant Cerulean blue, Scarlet red, Lemon yellow and Snow white.

Fairytales made real ...

Hjordis Oldfors for Upsala Ekeby, 1954-55 ‘Bockarna Bruse’ (Billy Goats Gruff) Series, Chamotte Dish

This delicious and rare work of Swedish mid-century Modern design is by Hjördis Oldfors (b. 1920 - d. 2014) for Upsala Ekeby. Oldfors was a celebrated Swedish ceramicist, painting, and textile artist, known for the many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics. Designed and in production between 1954 to 1955, this hand crafted work of art pottery comes from Oldfors' Bockarna Bruse [Billy Goats Gruff] series, for which there are 7 works consisting of 6 figures and 1 dish. The series is characterised by the stylised monochromatic goat figures and for this piece in particular, the Ink Blue glazed, chamotte earthenware dish.

Chamotte is also known as 'firesand', a raw ceramic material which has a high percentage of silica and alumina. Firesand is often produced by firing selected fire clays to high temperatures before grinding and screening to specific particle sizes.

The form of this piece and the series is undeniably Modernist in design, with a nod to the Norwegian fairy tale charm, stories of which were collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. The combination of this piece's form, design and condition makes this a particularly rare find.

Art Deco of the Bau-Haus kind ........

Shorter & Son, Art Deco Bauhaus Geometric Décor Raw Ocean Jasper Palette Planter, English, 1920s-30s

This striking work of Art Deco design is by the English pottery Shorter and Son (estd. c. 1900 - c. 1964). The sculpted and abstract jardiniere form firmly displays architectural influences of Art Deco Bauhaus geometricism. The overall shape is that of an oval slice that is an excellent canvas for the tactile décor.

The décor is an alternating pattern arranged with the triangular ridges. The horizontal ridges stagger in height as they wrap around the body and are further complimented by vertical ridges of staggered height. Further elevating this piece is the sumptuous glaze that is a blended flow of Cream, Caramel, Mocha brown tones which are offset by the Steel grey-blue. The glaze palette is similar to that of Raw Ocean Jasper. The visual appeal of this piece is timeless in style but also very much a piece of Art Deco history.

Vibes of funfairs, big top tents and easy breezy joy 🎪🍭🎈...

Mari Simmulson for Upsala Ekeby, 1956-57 Iris Series, Blue and White Stripe Polka, Wide Brim Vase

This delicious work of Swedish Mid Century Modern design is by Mari Simmulson (b. 1911- d. 2000) for Upsala Ekeby. Simmulson was a celebrated Swedish ceramics designer and ceramicist, known for many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics. This hand-thrown and hand-glazed work comes from Simmulson's Iris series, these earthenware works were designed around 1956 to 1957. The series is characterised by the delightfully organic blue and white stripes that are edged with Vanilla cream dots. There is firm delineation between the stripes and dots combined with the glossy glaze gives this piece a very touchable, tactile quality. The combination of the organic lines in black, the 'sprinkled' blue and pink speckled white glaze that is highlighted by the cheerful cream dots makes brings a joyful vibe to the overall piece.

This design is typically more difficult to source and the great condition this particular piece is in makes it an even rarer find. Stylistically, this work is timeless and is suitable for standalone display or functionally as a vase, a bowl, or even as a tealight lantern.

A friend for fans of Barbara Hepworth, Bertoncello and Roberto Rigon alike ...

Duif Keramiek Sculptural Globe, Statement Jug Vase in Nutmeg Speckled Stoneware Cream Glaze, 1970s

This charmingly chic and sculptural statement piece is of Seventies Modernist design by Dutch company Duif Keramiek. Crafted from white clay, the form of this piece is that of a polished globe shape that has been lightly 'shaved' at two sides and then rounded inwards to create the handle of the vase. The composition is finished with a 'stand-up collar' rim. The simple but elegant form makes this an excellent piece for the beautiful glaze that is a cream-beige accented with Nutmeg brown speckles. The imposing Statement size and design, combined with the palette and condition of the piece makes it an exceptionally rare find.

This timelessly elegant and very Modernist piece would suit a Minimalist, Modernist or even Contemporary décor themed room.

A bewitching fantasy ... 🌈🌈🌈

Sanyu Glassworks Narumi Fantasy Series Rainbow Sommerso Handblown Abstract Bottle Vase, 1970s

This beautifully sculpted and handblown work of Japanese art glass is attributed to the glassworks Sanyu, from the 'Narumi Fantasy' candy-like coloured series.

The form is superbly organic with five lobes wrapping around the abstract bottle form, making this piece very tactile and giving it a prismatic ability. The colour palette is seemingly complicated but is in fact composed of Fuschia pink, Summer Sky blue and Pale Chrome yellow. The colours have been blown in angled overlapping stripes within the magnifying clear exterior casing which opens up additional tones of green, purple and orange depending on which face of the vase is turned to.

There is a further layer of hidden magic within this piece that becomes apparent when it is placed in the pathway of sunlight and surrounding surfaces light up from the refractions. The majestic size of this piece and the enchanting quality of the captured colours makes this piece suitable for display or lightly accented as a Ikebana vase.

Sleek and chic in black and white 😎

Gunnar Nylund for Rorstrand, 'Hund' (Hound), Sculpted Mid Century Modernist Figure, 1950s, Swedish

This striking work of Swedish Modernist design is Hound figure designed by the celebrated Swedish ceramicist and designer Gunnar Nylund (b.1904 - d.1997) for Rörstrand. The series of figures includes a Rooster and Fish and is characterised by the monochromatic palette that has been applied in a stylised technique that highlights the hand painted and 'hand drawn' manner. The aesthetic style is like that of a sketched drawing that has been 'brought to life' into a 3D figure.

The angular rise-and-fall form and décor makes this a touch-inviting tactile piece. Stylistically timeless and contemporary, this work is a outstanding example of Scandinavian mid-century Modern design and the combination of design, form and condition makes this a rare find.
