Crossing the High Alps through Switzerland and Italy, this 210km hiking route unravels some of the region's most intriguing human history.

As I stopped to rest, the deep tolling of cow bells echoed across Alpine meadows bright with the blooms of wildflowers. I took in a lungful of fresh mountain air, half-wondering how on earth the Walser people managed to walk this same steep trail with their livestock and worldly possessions, and pushed further along the ancient mule track that led up and out of the Binna Valley beyond the tiny hamlet of Fald.

Gareth Southgate’s eight years as England manager will be judged as an age of progress in many areas, but ultimately one of falling agonisingly short when it came to claiming the big prizes.

Southgate leaves following the Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain, with a better record than anyone in the job since 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey, deserving total respect for the manner in which he handled the unique pressures of being England manager.

And England’s consistent appearances in the latter stages of major tournaments was a sharp contrast to the fallow years of embarrassing exits of predecessors Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson - the one-match reign of Sam Allardyce being the Football Association’s “blink and you missed it” moment.

England manager Gareth Southgate has resigned two days after defeat by Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.

The Three Lions lost 2-1 in Berlin on Sunday - their second consecutive Euros final defeat, having been beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley three years ago.

Southgate, 53, managed his country for 102 games in eight years in charge. His contract was set to expire later this year.

"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England," said Southgate.

"It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

Increasingly, T20 is turning into a young man’s game, a young man who can’t be bothered about personal statistics, but is focused on where his next six is coming from. This is a cultural change in Indian cricket that is going unnoticed - too many big players in the past have shown an unhealthy concern about how they look in the record books where figures stand shorn of context.

Albania scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to deny Croatia a victory that severely dents the 2018 World Cup finalists' hopes of reaching the knockout stage of Euro 2024.

In what was a chaotic but entertaining end to the game, the Albanians rescued a point when Klaus Gjasula side-footed home in the 95th minute to send their supporters wide.

It had looked like the game would finish in heartbreak for Albania, having let slip another early lead.

Britain's Molly Caudery won the pole vault event at the World Athletics Continental Tour meet in the Czech Republic with a world-leading mark this year.

Caudery, 24, cleared 4.84m, the highest women’s outdoor vault in the world so far in 2024, at the Ostrava Golden Spike.

The world indoor champion had two unsuccessful attempts at setting a new national record of 4.92m.

Outside nightclubs, on railway platforms, in supercars and the barber's chair - Manchester’s footballers have been photographed in the wild by brothers Eamonn and James Clarke for as long as the Premier League has existed.

Managers have come and gone, stars have waxed and waned, fortunes ebbed and flowed, and - through it all, the Clarkes have seen United and City's rivalry play out against the backdrop of a booming city.

As the two teams prepare to travel south for Saturday's FA Cup final, here are six of the brothers' favourite images from the past 20 years.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says the club want to keep skipper Bruno Fernandes after the Portuguese midfielder stated his desire to remain at Old Trafford.

United are known to be willing to listen to offers for all their first-team stars, with the exception of youngsters Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund as they look to raise funds for a squad rebuilding exercise.

Fernandes is on that list and has been linked with moves to Inter Milan and Bayern Munich in recent days, although it is felt it would take a sizeable offer to persuade United to part with their talisman.

In an on-pitch interview on Sky Sports after he had played a starring role in the false nine position in his side’s 3-2 Premier League win over Newcastle, Fernandes stated his commitment to the club.

“I will be here if the club wants me to be a part of the future,” he said. “If for some reason they don’t want me, I will go.”

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah said if he speaks "there will be fire" after he argued with manager Jurgen Klopp on the touchline during the 2-2 Premier League draw at West Ham.

Salah seemed to clash with Klopp as he prepared to come on as a 79th-minute substitute.

Klopp said he would not disclose what the argument was about, but former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch said on TNT Sports that "it doesn't look good for the club".

"Salah is a player who has started the majority of games for Liverpool and he will be fuming to be on the bench," Crouch said.

"But no-one likes to see this between a manager and a key player."

Salah seemed frustrated at something Klopp said to him as he was about to be brought on, and seemed to want to prolong the altercation before team-mates Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez shepherded him away.

The result left Liverpool all but out of the title race. They are third in the table and must rely on Arsenal and Manchester City dropping points to give them a glimmer of hope.

Mikel Arteta says he must show his Arsenal side "support and love" after Bayern Munich knocked them out of the Champions League.

Joshua Kimmich's second-half header in Germany gave Bayern a 1-0 win on the night, and a 3-2 aggregate victory in their quarter-final.

It was a second successive defeat for Arsenal, who lost control of the Premier League title race last Sunday as Aston Villa beat them 2-0.

"I wish I had the right words to say to the players to make them feel better. What I am going to do - and all the coaching staff too - is to be close to the players." Arteta said.

"I feel so grateful to be the coach and to work with them every single day."

Arsenal were chasing a first Champions League semi-final spot since 2009, with Arteta accepting his team were inexperienced at this stage of the competition. This was their first quarter-final appearance since 2010.

"We haven't played this competition for seven years and we haven't been in this stage for 14 years," he said. "There's a reason for it.

"We want to do everything fast-forward, super-quick, in one season. I think we have the capacity and the quality to be in the semi-final because the margins are very small.

"Those margins are coming from something else that maybe we don't have yet. We have to learn it.

"When you look historically, it took other clubs seven, eight or 10 years to do it. Today, that's not going to make us feel better that's for sure."

The Gunners, who need City to drop points if they are to win the league for the first time since 2003-04, return to Premier League action at Wolves on Saturday.

"What I need to do is stand right next to them and give them support and our love and we have to pick it up because on Saturday we have a big, big game," said Arteta.

"We are still playing for the Premier League. The Premier League is there and we really want it. We have to show now that we are capable of turning this around."

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said he would like a "joystick" to control his players like in a video game after they were held by West Ham.

The Spurs boss was left frustrated as his side missed the chance to move into the Premier League top four with the draw at a rain-soaked London Stadium.

Brennan Johnson's tap-in put them ahead after five minutes, but the Hammers levelled when Kurt Zouma headed home from a corner.

Both sides showed endeavour but lacked a cutting edge as the spoils were shared.

Despite having 68% possession Spurs only had four shots on target, including Johnson's early opener and Destiny Udogie volleying straight at home goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski in second-half stoppage time.

They never looked likely to achieve the two-goal margin of victory they needed to overtake fourth-placed Aston Villa, who face Manchester City on Wednesday at Etihad Stadium.

Postecoglou's side remain fifth, two points behind Villa, and the Australian said his team missed "clarity of thought" at times in attack.

Trabzonspor fans ran on to the field and attacked Fenerbahce players after Sunday's Super Lig match.

Fenerbahce players were met with violence as they celebrated their 3-2 victory at Papara Park in Trabzon.

Fenerbahce's Bright Osayi-Samuel and Michy Batshuayi both tried to intervene as security services entered the field.

"It is never acceptable for violence to take place on football pitches - above all, sport is gentlemanship," Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.

"An investigation has been initiated immediately to identify the spectators who entered the pitch and to investigate the incidents that took place at the end of the match," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
