Andy Farrell's sabbatical to focus on leading the British and Irish Lions in 2025 will give Ireland the chance to test a coach in the "highest pressure environment in the Six Nations", says new Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) high performance director David Humphreys.

Farrell will step away from his duties as Ireland head coach after the autumn internationals ahead of the Lions' tour of Australia next year.

The IRFU are tasked with finding a suitable replacement to oversee Ireland's bid for a third successive Six Nations title, but Humphreys is not fazed by the process.

The Premier League faces a vote to scrap the use of video assistant referees (VAR) from next season.

All 20 member clubs will vote at their annual general meeting on 6 June.

The vote was triggered after Wolves formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League on Wednesday.

Wolves are not the only ones aggrieved at VAR, after a fifth season of debate, scrutiny, complaints and apologies since the technology was introduced in 2019-20.

But the Premier League remains supportive of VAR, and member clubs voted in April for the introduction of semi-automated offsides from the 2024-25 season.

The league says that VAR has improved correct decisions from 82%, prior to its introduction, to 96% this season.

So which clubs are for and against VAR and what happens next?

Arsenal's 3-0 lead after 38 minutes is the second quickest in a Premier League north London derby
Arsenal overcame the hurdle of a north London derby and an anxious finale to maintain momentum in the Premier League title pursuit with a vital victory at Tottenham.

Mikel Arteta's side moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League, with second-place Manchester City, who have two games in hand, playing in the later kick-off at Nottingham Forest (16:30 BST).

The Gunners' meeting with their bitter rivals was seen as arguably the most treacherous of their remaining fixtures, but they took ruthless advantage of Spurs' defensive flaws to establish a three-goal lead by half-time.

Arsenal were then thrown off course when a dreadful clearance by goalkeeper David Raya presented Cristian Romero with a goal after 64 minutes, the nerves really jangling when Heung-min Son scored from the spot three minutes from the end of normal time after Declan Rice fouled Ben Davies.

It was all so different when Arsenal went ahead after 15 minutes as the recalled Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg glanced Bukayo Saka's corner into his own net, the England forward crowning a sweeping counter-attack with a smooth finish for the second after 27 minutes.

FA Cup replays will be scrapped from the first round onwards in the 2024-25 competition.

All rounds of the Emirates FA Cup will also be played on weekends, including the fifth round which has been played in midweek for the past five seasons.

The changes come as part of a new six-year agreement between the Football Association (FA) and the Premier League.

The Premier League has also removed its mid-season break from the calendar.

Matches will start in mid-August following a consecutive three-week summer break instead of a shorter spell of rest in the winter, with the decision coming from "expert advice from medical and technical departments".

In its current format, the FA Cup has no replays from the fifth round onwards, but the FA says the move to eliminate them from an earlier stage has been made "in light of changes to the calendar driven by the expanded Uefa competitions".

Uefa launched the Europa Conference League in 2021 and the number of teams in the Champions League group stage will rise from 32 to 36 next season, while Fifa has announced an expanded 32-team Club World Cup for 2025.

Bournemouth's impressive run continued as substitute Justin Kluivert's goal against Crystal Palace earned his team a fourth win in five games.

Kluivert fired beyond Dean Henderson after fellow substitute Antoine Semenyo out-muscled David Ozoh to tee-up his team-mate for the goal.

The game, played in wet and windy conditions, looked to be heading for a goalless conclusion at Vitality Stadium.

Philip Billing had a header tipped on to the bar by Henderson while at the other end Eberechi Eze's goal celebrations were cut short by an offside flag after the Palace player had finished from six yards.

But Kluivert's 79th-minute winner proved the difference and lifted his side up to 11th in the table.

Danish reporter Niels Christian Frederiksen insists he has "absolutely no problem" after facing an outburst from Jurgen Klopp following Liverpool's FA Cup loss at Manchester United.

A clip of the Liverpool manager angrily ending a post-match interview with Frederiksen for Viaplay went viral on social media on Sunday evening.

"What is wrong with you?" Klopp asked the interviewer.

Frederiksen says the exchange continued after the cameras stopped rolling.

"It continued after what was seen on TV. He continued down the hallway, where he yelled and screamed at me. I also followed him because I thought it was something strange," Frederiksen told Danish sports magazine Tipsbladet on Monday.

Klopp was frustrated by questions about his team's intensity during their dramatic 4-3 quarter-final defeat at Old Trafford.

"Come on, you're obviously not in a great shape and I have no nerves for you," he told the reporter as he brought the interview to a premature end.

"I interpret it mostly as an expression of his terrible frustration that they lost to Manchester United in the manner it happened, where they were ahead twice and should have sealed the deal," Frederiksen added.

"Then he got a question about why they didn't have intensity in the game, and then he snapped.

"That's fair enough. I have absolutely no problem with that. There will be absolutely no problems in the future. I can't imagine that at all.

"When I interview him again, we'll still be good friends - professionally speaking. I don't think he holds a grudge, and I certainly don't."

Frederiksen also rejected suggestions on social media that Klopp's "you're obviously not in a great shape" comment was in relation to his weight.

"No, no, no, that's not what he meant at all," he said. "First of all, I'm not overweight, and if I was, he would never, ever say that. Klopp is not like that.

"It wasn't meant like that at all. He's not at all mean. He meant that I was unable and unfit to ask questions. There was nothing else."

Harry Kane scored two to help Bayern Munich overturn a first-leg deficit against Lazio and advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Rome, Bayern looked set for a frustrating night until Kane's header levelled the scores on aggregate.

Long-serving Thomas Muller doubled the lead on the night with another header.

Kane made it 3-1 on aggregate from close range after Leroy Sane's shot was parried into his path.

It was an impressive turnaround by Bayern and Kane is hoping the result can help change Bayern's fortunes after a bitterly disappointing domestic campaign

"It's a perfect evening for us. It was a big game," he said.

"Of course we know we have to improve, but nights like this can really change the season. I'm really proud of the boys and we just have to keep this momentum going.

"It was a really important moment in our season. Everyone was looking at us, looking at how we were going to respond after the first leg.

"Hopefully we can use this as a turning point for the rest of the season."

Thomas Tuchel's side were facing a first season without a major trophy since 2011-12.

However, this win keeps alive Tuchel's hopes of delivering Bayern a seventh European title before the former Chelsea boss leaves at the end of the season.

Bordeaux striker Alberth Elis is in an induced coma in hospital after suffering a serious head injury in a collision with an opponent.

The club confirmed on Sunday that he had surgery following the incident against Guingamp on Saturday.

Play was paused in the French Ligue 2 match for eight minutes when Elis, 28, clashed heads with defender Donatien Gomis after just 40 seconds.

Bordeaux say it is "impossible" to comment on Elis' prognosis.

"We warmly thank all those who have shown their support for Alberth and those close to him, in particular the clubs across France," said Bordeaux president Gerard Lopez."Your words warm our hearts and are a great strength in the fight that Alberth is waging."

Gomis completed the remainder of the match, despite the collision.

"I think he [Elis] hits the ball first, I hit him," said Gomis. "For a second, I was also in a daze. He lost consciousness. I hope he gets better."

The striker has 64 caps for Honduras, scoring 13 goals. After three years with Major League Soccer (MLS)club Houston Dynamo, Elis moved to Europe, joining Boavista.

He spent one season in Portugal before signing for Bordeaux, scoring 15 goals in 60 appearances since his move in 2021.

A late Ryan Mendes penalty helped Cape Verde overcome Mauritania to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations for just the second time.

The game looked set for extra time until Yassine El Welly's careless defensive header inadvertently played in Benchimol, who was brought down by goalkeeper Babacar Niasse.

Captain Mendes did the rest, smashing his spot kick hard down the middle in the 88th minute.

The result sets up a quarter-final against either Morocco or South Africa on Saturday (20:00 GMT).

What effect will Saudi Arabia have on Afcon 2023?
Both teams had chances in a lively and fully committed encounter, leaving everything out on the field in Abidjan - but the match ultimately lacked real quality, especially in the final third.

Playing in their first-ever Nations Cup knockout game, Mauritania looked full of energy early on, with livewire runners bursting from deep, the lustrous gold trim and numbers of their kit sparkling in the late afternoon sunshine.

But it was Mendes who nearly broke the deadlock after nine minutes, racing on to a long ball over the top and lifting a delicate lob from distance over the despairing Niasse but wide.

It would have been a stunning opener.
