In 2011, the last time India won a cricket World Cup, everybody knew it would be batter Sachin Tendulkar’s final chance.
He was 39, it was his sixth attempt, and the team’s unofficial slogan was "Let’s do it for Sachin".
After skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit the winning six, Virat Kohli, who was among those who carried Tendulkar on their shoulders, said memorably, “He has carried our batting on his shoulders for so long, it is time we carried him on our shoulders.”
And now Kohli, Tendulkar’s natural successor who turns 36 this year, is in the twilight of his own career.

Great Britain have named England pair Ellie Kildunne and Megan Jones in their 12-strong women's sevens squad for this summer's Paris Olympic Games.

Both backs played an influential role as the Red Roses won a third consecutive Women's Six Nations Grand Slam in April, before joining the sevens squad to begin Olympic preparation.

Kildunne, 24, was the top try-scorer in the Six Nations and was previously involved in a GB Sevens camp before the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but chose to withdraw to make herself eligible for a professional XVs contract.

Britain's shot put champion was forced to bin his prized equipment at airport security after it was deemed "too heavy" for hand luggage.

Scott Lincoln, 31, from Northallerton, said he was travelling back home from the Golden Spike event in the Czech Republic when he missed the airport bag drop.

However, Mr Lincoln said check-in staff told him he would not be able to take the shot put - worth between £100-£150 - on to the plane himself due to its weight.

"It is just horrible, isn't it?" says James. "All those bootcut jeans and that sort of stuff."

This image of Manchester United's players on their way to their 2005 Christmas party - fairly unremarkable at the time - regularly resurfaces as a younger audience marvel at the everyday appearance of a set of superstars walking Manchester's streets together.

"Back then our whole business was United," Eamonn adds. "They were everything - our bread and butter. There wasn’t a market for City pictures.

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon said he "doesn't understand the point" of having video assistant referees (VAR) in football.

Gordon was denied a first-half penalty despite appearing to be caught by Manchester United's Sofyan Amrabat in Newcastle's 3-2 loss at Old Trafford.

With Newcastle 1-0 behind at the time, on-field referee Rob Jones did not give a spot-kick and was then not told to review the incident by VAR official Jarred Gillett.

"I have watched it back and it is a clear penalty," said Gordon. "He [Amrabat] goes down my Achilles and pushes me in the back. I knew straight away, that's why I didn't appeal. I waited for the VAR to check, I told my team-mates 'it was a clear penalty'.

"I don't mind the referee getting it wrong on the pitch, but I don't understand the point of VAR. Either get rid of it or get better. It's that simple, there's too many mistakes."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe added: "I thought it was a penalty. I thought that’s what VAR was good at.

“I have always been in an era where the referee makes a decision and I back it. I would possibly keep it [VAR] with offsides, but I want more power with referees."

Gordon's comments came hours after it was announced that Premier League clubs will vote on whether to remove VAR from next season at their annual general meeting next month.

Wolves have formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League which will trigger a vote when the 20 member clubs meet in Harrogate on 6 June.

Earlier on Wednesday, ex-England captain Wayne Rooney, speaking on Sky Sports, said he preferred the game without VAR.

"I don't like VAR and if it's there and they get all the decisions right then fair enough but it's taken all the enjoyment out of the game," he added.

"You're better off letting referees ref it and understand they will make mistakes. I'd much rather see the game without it."

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana cost his side victory as Zeki Amdouni converted a late penalty to grab a priceless point for relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Despite another unconvincing display from Erik ten Hag's men, they did look set for victory thanks to Antony's well-taken 79th-minute effort.

But, just as he did on the opening day against Wolves, Onana recklessly charged from his line in an attempt to punch the ball clear but hit an opposition player instead.

Although referee John Brooks missed the incident in real time, unlike against Wolves the video assistant referee, Peter Bankes, stepped in. Substitute Amdouni recovered from being on the wrong end of Onana's fist to send the keeper the wrong way.

The result moved Burnley to within two points of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, whom they play at Turf Moor on the final day of the season.

"We've earned the right to believe and hope," Burnley manager Vincent Kompany told Match of the Day.

Kompany said "the task is to do something special" against Newcastle next Saturday, before Burnley travel to Tottenham the following week.

"We have an opportunity on that one day against Forest," he said.

United, meanwhile, are still to win successive league games since February and, with new technical director Jason Wilcox watching on, boos from the home fans greeted the final whistle, although they were not as loud as the ones triggered by Ten Hag's decision to take off teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after 65 minutes.

Former midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger says he was banned from first-team training by manager Jose Mourinho during his time at Manchester United.

Schweinsteiger, 39, made 31 appearances under Louis van Gaal in 2015-16.

He played only four games under Mourinho the following season before joining MLS club Chicago Fire in 2017.

"I was very sad because United was the second club of my heart," Schweinsteiger told the Overlap.

"I gave a lot when I played as well, so that's why I was sad, but I'm not the type of person to go running to the media. It's more important for me to focus on football and behave the way I did."

Former Germany international Schweinsteiger missed the final 11 games of the 2015-16 season because of injury and received treatment in Germany before Euro 2016.

United appointed Mourinho as Van Gaal's successor in May 2016.

Schweinsteiger played six games at the Euros as Germany reached the semi-finals and missed the start of United's pre-season in the USA.

"When I arrived on the first day, I trained with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and thought it was great, a player who has the vision and is amazing to play with," Schweinsteiger said.

"The next day, on my birthday, when I walked into (United's training ground) Carrington, (football director) John Murtough was there and said that I wasn't allowed to walk into the dressing room - the coach had said so.

"I had to ask him to bring me my cleats and training gear. I asked him who I was training with, and he said there was the under-16 team, so I went and trained with the under-16s."

Schweinsteiger's first appearance of that season came in November 2016 in the Carabao Cup against West Ham. He made a further three appearances across the FA Cup and Europa League prior to moving to the MLS.

"The first time someone apologised was when I decided to leave Manchester United for America," Schweinsteiger said.

"I asked Jose if I could do that and he apologised for the way he treated my in the beginning. He had to let me go because he could not do something against me again."

Schweinsteiger retired in 2019 after three seasons with Chicago.

Chelsea say a video clip of Conor Gallagher with a young black mascot has been "taken considerably out of context" and condemned the "completely unacceptable" abuse towards the player.

In the widely shared clip, Gallagher does not acknowledge a high five from the child in the tunnel before Saturday's 2-2 draw with Burnley.

The Blues captain, 24, then walks out with the child at Stamford Bridge.

"It's [the abuse] upset me so much," said Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.

"No-one wants to do something like this, with this intention. I think he has many videos and photography with the mascots.

"When you play football, you are focusing to play, to start the game.

"I think people try to find things to create a mess and to abuse the people.

"I know Conor. I can speak for the people I know. Come on, that was never was his intention."

Speaking before Thursday's Premier League match against Manchester United, the Argentine said: "Conor is a great, great kid, always caring about everything.

"I hate the people who abuse on things like this. I think we need to stop this type of thing.

"For people today, it is so easy [to abuse], to give too much attention to the people who want to create this type of thing - to mess, insult and abuse. Please stop.

"How is it possible to believe Conor's intention is to ignore a mascot? Come on. It makes me very sad because I know Conor."

Following the sharing of the clip, the England midfielder's Instagram was inundated with abusive comments, including being called a racist.

In a statement, the Blues said: "Chelsea Football Club is aware of a video clip circulating on social media from Saturday's fixture against Burnley, which has been taken considerably out of context.

"The subsequent level of abuse and defamatory comments directed towards Conor Gallagher is completely unacceptable.

"We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people fro

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott says the FA Cup defeat by Manchester United will not affect the team's confidence and they will return after the international break ready "to fight for the rest of the season".

"It frees up a few weeks for us," said Elliott.

"Not as many games any more so the lads can be fresh and we can recover properly and focus on the rest of the season.

"Our confidence is always there. It isn't going to affect us at all. We're going to be annoyed that we didn't win, but we're going away with internationals now, so we can forget about it and come back after the break fresh again.

"Confidence-wise it's not going to do anything to us because we had the game in our hands and had many chances but just didn't put them away.

"We just need to keep going as a team."

The Reds are next in action when they host Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday, 31 March.

PSG's best chance of Champions League glory'
Mbappe has scored 26 goals in all competitions for PSG this season, with 21 of them coming in the league to put him top of the scoring charts.

PSG are well on the way to retaining their Ligue 1 title as they sit nine points clear of second-placed Brest.

But while domestic triumphs have come easily to PSG under their Qatar-based owners, Champions League success has so far eluded them.

Given his record in the competition, it would appear foolish for PSG not to get as much as possible from one of the world's finest players before he leaves.

The 25-year-old has excelled in the Champions League, scoring 44 goals in 68 appearances in the competition - including 38 for PSG.

The Paris club are on course to reach the quarter-finals as they face Real Sociedad on Tuesday holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.

"Luis Enrique does have to start planning for next season but it's a curious policy because Mbappe is their best chance of winning the Champions League," added Horncastle.

"You need to make the most of him while he is still there."

Wembley awaits as Chelsea take on Liverpool in a mouth-watering Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

While the Reds are after a record-extending 10th triumph in the competition, and what they hope will be the first of four trophies in Jurgen Klopp's last season in charge, Chelsea are hunting their first silverware under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Blues have spent more than £1bn on new players since the Clearlake ownership group, led by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, took over the club in May 2022 - but how many of them are better than their Liverpool counterparts?

We want you to pick your combined XI from the Chelsea and Liverpool players likely to feature in the first domestic final of the season.

When Harry Kane slashed Thomas Muller's cutback over the Lazio bar seven minutes into the Champions League last-16 first leg, the Bayern Munich forward would not have expected that would be his best chance all night.

But Kane was left frustrated for the remaining 83 minutes plus added time as Bayern fell to defeat in Rome, a penalty from Ciro Immobile the difference on a night when the German giants - and their star striker - underwhelmed once again.

In a season which started so brightly for Kane, this is becoming a worrying theme and one which is pervading the entire Bayern team. The side who have won the Bundesliga for the past 11 seasons are in danger of ending this campaign without a trophy.

As well as trailing to Lazio going into the second leg in Munich on 5 March, Bayern are also out of the German Cup having been stunned by third division Saarbrucken. Kane already missed out on a trophy in his first game with his new club, when they were hammered 3-0 by RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup.
