Waldybag Waldybag is a high-end British handbag brand by H Wald & Co, founded in 1915 in London by my grandfather, Harry.

The six degrees of separation theory made me shiver today.

Watching VE Day broadcasts, I see Ruth Klauber, 101 years old this year, being interviewed. She came to the UK as a young Jewish girl after her family fled Germany when the N***s came to power in 1933.

She just only received her medals for her work as a mechanic, fixing RAF planes, including Lancaster bombers, without which victory would not have been won.

Ruth was an immigrant to the country, just like my Dad and grandfather were when they arrived from Poland. As Ruth fixed the planes, H Wald & Co helped ensure the efficiency, safety and comfort of the pilots with the helmets the company manufactured for the RAF. A quarter of a million of them! With earpieces that improved the sound insulation and fit and soft leather that moulded to the wearer.

Today I’m honouring the heroic memory of those who fought for our freedom - and those like Ruth and my father who helped them succeed in their mission.

Simon Wilson of Butler & Wilson jewellery has a passion for the glorious, floral hand-painted Waldybags (and I have posted before about it).

When I popped in store on the Fulham Road over bank holiday weekend, this dazzling display of beauties greeted me.
I had never seen the six-sided handbag before - new to me 👏🏼

My Dad, Morris Wald and Florence Campbell who was the first (of three family members) to paint them, first began working together back in the late 1940s/early 1950s and countless customers, including many brides, over the decades are overjoyed they did.

Thanks to Jane at the store for letting me photograph these joyous examples from the 1959s/60s

Exhibition alert
Waldybag on show, Fort Wayne Indiana
Purseonality is a touring exhibition featuring a dazzling and rare selection of handbags from the remarkable collection of Ilene Rosenthal Hochberg Wood. It has just opened at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Indiana.

Irene is possibly the world’s most prolific individual handbag collector (outstripping even me!) so I’m especially proud that a hand painted Waldybag, executed by Florence Campbell and designed/made in the early 1950s has made the cut.

Visitors to the show, which runs until July 20, 2025, can see a timeline of trends across the decades, which also represent Wood’s favourites.

Ooh look, the Waldybag is officially an ‘it’ bag - from the 1940s. That’s according to the . Made for Stella Reading, (the Marchioness of Reading), the WWII govt minister founded and was chairman of the Women's Voluntary Service (WVS), now known as Royal Voluntary Service. A rare example of a gas mask handbag - a completely normal (albeit exceptionally well-crafted) handbag at the top; stashing the required gas mask in the rounded base. The museum has another, made of lizard skin. Thanks , we’ll take that… or it.
