In a world simultaneously connected through and plagued by social media, silence is becoming an ever-appreciating commodity.

The monk's gentle voice ebbed as he rang a large bronze bell, the first of three "dings" signalling us to settle onto our cushions. I took one last glance at the September sunrise spilling onto the magenta orchids of the Buddha altar, bringing dimension to the otherwise dimly lit room. The interplay of fragrant incense weaving through the sun's golden rays created an ambiance of complete serenity in the Great Togetherness Meditation Hall. A calligraphy banner above the altar read, "This Is It" – reminding me that the present moment is all we have.

"A lot of people come up to me and say 'you're too nice to be a boxer' but I don't need to be aggressive outside the ring because I let all that out when I'm training."

Lewis Richardson got into boxing almost by accident, after going to a gym with friends in order to get fitter for football.

But his efforts in the ring have finally carried him to the ultimate goal, a place in the GB team for the Paris Olympics.

Scott McTominay stood on the touchline at Hampden drenched to the bone and yet fired up to the high heavens. It was June 2023; the rainy night against Georgia. A biblical downpour. A match in peril. Weegies with squeegees and all of that.

The visitors did not want to play but McTominay most certainly did. He stared them out when they finally appeared and the action began, long after the scheduled kick-off. Hampden was alive that night - and so was the Manchester United midfielder. He scored in a 2-0 win. Of course he did.

Victorian Plumbing has bought its rival online bathroom retailer Victoria Plum in a deal worth £22.5m.

The takeover comes just over six months after Victoria Plum went into administration and was bought in a so-called pre-pack deal with AHK Designs.

Skelmersdale-based Victorian Plumbing said a cost-cutting plan was already under way at Doncaster-based Victoria Plum.

It brings together the two long-standing rivals, which met in court over a trademark dispute eight years ago.

Two Love Island winners have announced that they've got engaged.

Sanam Harrinanan and Kai Fagan, both 25, were voted best couple on the ITV reality dating show in March 2023.

They first coupled up at Casa Amor - the notorious section of the show where boys and girls are split between two villas and tempted away from their current partner.

But they won't be recoupling now and, in true Love Islander fashion, the pair announced the news on Instagram.

Kai posted photos of the couple on a riverboat in Cambridge, taken on Saturday, that showed the happy moment.

"Introducing the next Mrs Fagan," he wrote.

"Beautiful, caring, loving and smart are just some of the words that describe you.

"I love loving you, I love you and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."

Tesla, the electric car company owned by Elon Musk, has recalled thousands of its new Cybertrucks over safety concerns.

It is because their accelerator pedals currently risk getting trapped by the interior trim, increasing the possibility of crashes.

The BBC recently spoke to a whistleblower at the company who had raised concerns over the safety of pedals of previous Tesla models.

Tesla has been contacted for comment.

The recall affects 3,878 Cybertrucks, which cost roughly $61,000 (£48,320), made between November 2023 and April 2024.

"A trapped accelerator pedal can cause the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally, increasing the risk of a crash," the US Department of Transportation wrote, external in a notification of the recall.

The problem comes from the accelerator pad which, if pushed hard, can dislodge and then get trapped in the interior trim of the truck.

Tesla will fix the problem free of charge, according to its filing, external with the US government.

It also notes that pressing the brake pedal will override the accelerator and should still bring the truck to a stop.

The company says an "unapproved change" in the production of the pedal meant "lubricant" was used in its assembly, which means the pad did not stick properly to the pedal.

The electric car company received two complaints about the issue from drivers, on 31 March and 4 April.

The company wrote that it is "not aware of any collisions, injuries or deaths relating to this condition," as of 15 April.

Google has begun trialling search answers written by artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK, after the feature was tested in the US last year.

Initially only a small proportion of logged-in UK users will see an AI-generated "overview" at the top of some search results.

While Google is the most popular search engine, Microsoft's rival Bing already integrates its Copilot AI.

But some publishers worry AI answers may reduce visits to their sites.

They fear longer chatbot-style responses will satisfy users' curiosity without having to visit their websites, while AI answers will also contain fewer links and ads.

The "Search Generative Experience" - as Google dubs the feature - has been available for nearly a year in the US, but only to users who signed up via Google Labs.

It said the UK experiment will involve a "small slice" of UK search traffic, selected from logged-in users.

It comes as a front-page report in the Financial Times suggested that the firm was considering offering subscriptions for some premium AI search features in the future.

Google denied it was "working on or considering an ad-free search experience".

Hema Budaraju, who helps drive Google's generative AI efforts in search, told the BBC its new search results will still display links and ads.

She said it was a "priority" to continue to send traffic to creators, and claimed AI-powered search results were "actually showing more links to a wider range of sources".

The "proof was in the pudding", she said, adding that so far users were clicking on an increased range of sources too.

A former Google software engineer has been charged by the US with stealing trade secrets about artificial intelligence (AI) while secretly working for two Chinese companies.

Linwei Ding, also known as Leon Ding, was indicted in California on four charges and arrested on Wednesday.

The Chinese national allegedly stole more than 500 confidential files.

If convicted he faces up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines on each count.

A lawyer for Mr Ding could not be identified to comment on the case, local media reported.

The information he is accused of taking relates to the infrastructure of Google's supercomputing data centres, which are used to host and train large AI models.

According to the indictment, Mr Ding was hired by Google in 2019 and his responsibilities included developing this software.

He allegedly began uploading information stored in Google's network to a personal Google account in May 2022. These uploads continued periodically for a year, the indictment reads.

Meanwhile, he is said to have spent several months in China working for Beijing Rongshu Lianzhi Technology - a start-up tech company that approached him. The indictment says he was offered $14,800 (£11,620) per month to be the company's Chief Technology Officer.

He is also alleged to have started his own tech firm, Shanghai Zhisuan Technology, which had a focus on AI and machine learning, and made himself the CEO.

How do you recreate a masterpiece? It's a question that Ivan Casaril and Fabrizio Dini have spent a lot of time thinking about.

Ivan is the lead game designer and Fabrizio the art director on the recently released remake of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

First released in 2013, the adventure-puzzle game was a sleeper hit thanks to its novel control scheme and heart-breaking narrative.

As the name suggests, the player controls two siblings on a quest through a fantastical land on a quest to save a family member.

Now Italian game studio Avantgarden has recreated the experience for current-gen consoles and PC.

No spoilers here, but anyone who played the original will agree with Ivan that Brothers "is something you can remember even after many years".

He says the game's appeal lies in its "fairytale" opening - "everything is colourful, cheerful" - but "the more you play through the levels, the darker the themes and the environment become, until the you reach a very emotional point", he says.

Ivan played the original - an Xbox Live Arcade title - and says it "had a deep emotional impact" on him.

Fabrizio says the 2013 version - which won a Bafta Games Award - is widely remembered as a "masterpiece" where the narrative was conveyed through the gameplay.

One of the most striking elements of the original was the use of a single joypad to move the two main characters - one control stick for the older brother, and the other for the younger boy.

Each had strengths and weaknesses, and it was up to players to figure out which boy to manoeuvre through obstacles.

For the remake, the control mechanic remains intact.

The Avantgarden team has added a secondary co-operative mode for two players using separate gamepads, though Ivan admits "the game is meant to be played solo".

A bigger, more obvious change is in the game's graphics - they've been given a complete overhaul, adding more detail and lighting to scenes and giving expression to the characters.

The team's also recorded a brand-new soundtrack performed by a live orchestra.

Ivan says one of the main goals was giving the game an "up-to-date presentation" and refining the original which, he points out, did have "some technical limitations".

"Eleven years later, you can tweak a bit on that point, you can boost graphics, you can add environments, you can improve the lighting, improve everything in that aspect," he says.

"And that is not just adding things blindly, it's also to add meaning to the scene, you have to work on the original one to see what the intent was," he says.

Fabrizio says the team gave "a lot of careful consideration" to any additions and the overall aim was to use modern technology to make "the graphics and play more vivid and immersive without overshadowing the original ideas".

Google has had to publicly state Gmail is "here to stay" after a hoax claiming it was shutting down spread widely on social media.

A post on X, formerly Twitter, which has been viewed more than seven million times, claimed it would be closing in August.

Google took to the same platform to rebuff the false claim.

A communications expert told the BBC it was "a classic example" of the dangers of misinformation.

"Most people believe what they see online, and there's a lack of tools and processes to verify the facts," said Richard Bagnall, boss of communications evaluation firm Carma.

"Whilst social networks can act without responsibility and pump unfiltered, unverified information to their audiences, this Gmail incident won't be the last case we'll see."
