I took this photo 10 years ago back in January 2016. Nige and Bob. It was the fourth round of the FA cup and Chelsea drew Scunthorpe at home, I think my phone was ringing not long after the draw. It was Nige who, knowing me and Roy were Blues, wanted to come and watch his beloved Scunthorpe at the Bridge. I told him if he could sit on his hands for 90 minutes we would take him, but he had to behave himself in the home crowd, where away supporters are not so welcome. Now anyone that knows Nige would laugh at the idea of him trying to keep still and wear a poker face every time Scunthorpe got the ball as we sat deep in the Shed End, but he just about managed, and I think he had fun (even though we won 2-0).

I was very sad to hear about Nige’s passing last week. We saw him a few months ago with his family. It was great to see him, but as he left it felt a little like a goodbye. The news last week still came as a shock though, and our thoughts and love are very much with Janet and the family. I found this one while looking through old photos of his visits to the showroom over years and times we caught up around the world.

I have enjoyed seeing the flood of messages and articles about him over the last seven days, he rightfully earned respect from around the world. The impact he made on men’s fashion was huge, and was truly one of a kind.

His strongest term of endearment was calling something a “right Bastard” which he said with a mixture of glee, respect, admiration and passion, all reserved for something truly special!

Well Nige, rest easy my friend, your legacy is going to be a right Bastard that is for sure, and I for one will enjoy continuing to watch it grow! Peace and love, Doug and Roy x

This weekend, Little Ships will take to the water in Ramsgate, as a commemoration to the civilian vessels that voyaged to Dunkirk to evacuate over 300,000 allied soldiers.

British advances into France were halted by German troops, leaving hundreds of thousands trapped and Britain vulnerable to invasion. The shallow waters on Dunkirk’s shores stopped military vessels from being able to rescue the soldiers, and so smaller fishing boats and recreational vessels were commandeered to act as shuttles on the shallow waters; a handful were even sailed by locals themselves.

Operation Dynamo commenced on the 26th May 1940 and over 9 days, 800 boats rescued 336,000 allied soldiers, and with it, a story of defeat became one of heroism, in an important event that raised morale.

Using vintage naval wear and stamped military sacks found in our archive, we created this homage to the voyage, and to the celebrations happening this weekend from Ramsgate’s harbour.
