Gray wolves of the Malberg wolf pack near Ely, Minnesota walk on atop a frozen lake. The average wolf travels 25 to 32 kilometers (15 to 20 miles) per day in pursuit of food—and can run up to 70 km/hr (43 mph).

Sunrise over the Erta Ale lava lake created a dramatic dichotomy between the power and intimidation of the angry volcano and the childlike innocence of a dancing stick-figure. The spewing and showering of molten lava, the charred, cracking of the newly formed black basalt, and the fiery sunset within the sulfuric haze created for a dramatic, ethereal experience akin to a "gateway to hell." The volcano had erupted only three weeks before this image was taken.

In this picture from the November 1992 issue, a pair of Southern American bald eaglets await food at the George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The Devil's Punchbowl is in the mountains of New Zealand at Arthurs pass, where the southern alps divides the west and east coast of the South Island. Here at least a meter of precipitation falls a year, be it snow or rain, and life just flourishes, latching onto any nook and cranny which will provide it with just a strong enough foothold to withstand the harsh alpine elements.
