I’m currently working on a project to alter a dress by turning it into a two-piece set. Out of all the possible options, this is the best choice as the dress no longer fits. I’ve always preferred straightforward garment construction and was never much of a fan of alterations, until recently, when I needed to alter some bridesmaid’s dress to make it fit. That experience made me realise that I really need to improve my alteration skills. I’m pleased the dresses turned out well and fitted perfectly in the end.

The art of alteration is one of the most valuable skills a tailor can possess. While sewing and garment construction are essential foundations, it is the ability to reshape, adjust, and refine clothing that truly elevates a tailor’s craftsmanship. Mastering alterations provides numerous advantages I.e enhancing the tailor’s professional abilities amongst other skills.

Here’s an update: the gaping neckline needs to be fixed, and there are a couple of tears from the unstitching that also need repair.

Back in 2021, I sewed a three-piece set: trousers, a blouse, and a face mask. At the time, I was struggling to cut and sew a stretchy sequin fabric using the worst pair of scissors ever, all while learning how to perfect sewing trousers. My boss back then didn’t sew trousers-she could, but she preferred not to take on those jobs. And since I was very much a “skirt girl,” I wasn’t particularly eager to learn trousers from her anyway. Still, over time I managed to make trousers for the boys and the occasional pair for myself.

Anyway, back to the story. I made the trousers, which turned out perfectly. I didn’t have much fabric left, but I wanted a blouse or at least a top to go with it. I had just enough to make a bodice and short sleeves, which worked out well. I attached an A-line skirt to the bodice and was pleased with the result.

Fast-forward to 2025: the top part of the blouse still fits because it’s stretchy(although the faux-leather bias binding on the neckline needs replacing-that’s a story for another day), but the bottom half doesn’t recognise its owner anymore. Hey ho! 😉 So I decided to alter it. I’m currently working on it. I’ve cut a flared bottom panel to replace the A-line, and hopefully it will be ready by the end of this weekend.

The skirt is nearly finished, the bandeau is almost ready, and next up is the lace bolero to complete the look.

It’s been a busy week. Hope you all are having a fabulous weekend?

Final decision: mini skirt and crop top bandeau - unless I’m struck by an epiphany! 😉 I added a touch of lace at the hem of the skirt. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
