If we have not met properly yet…hi I’m Jess, founder of Orwell and Austen.

I started the brand at my kitchen table after years of working in law in central London, wearing black and grey and feeling completely burnt out by it all.
I wanted to create the kind of knitwear I could never quite find: pieces that felt colourful, joyful and full of personality, but were still beautifully made and designed to last.

That is still the heart of the brand now. Dressing for joy, using beautiful fibres, and creating knitwear that earns its place in your wardrobe for years to come.

May had a little bit of everything, and not necessarily in a good way.

Delays, last minute changes, things moving more slowly than I wanted, and the usual behind the scenes juggling act of trying to keep everything looking calm while quietly solving one problem after another.

Running a small brand often looks very polished from the outside. In reality, some months are much more about pivoting, firefighting and doing your best to keep things moving without losing sight of why you started in the first place.

May definitely felt like one of those months. If you have supported Orwell and Austen through the messier, less glossy moments as well as the smooth ones, thank you. Every order, every message and every bit of patience means more than I can say. 💌
