On May 13, 1994, Crooklyn premiered as one of Spike Lee's most personal films. Starring Zelda Harris, Alfre Woodard, and Delroy Lindo, this coming-of-age story about a Black family in 1970s Brooklyn had deeply personal roots that stretched back decades before cameras rolled.

The story began with Joie Lee, Spike's sister, reflecting on their family life in 1973 when she was just eight years old. She teamed up with her brother Cinqué to turn those childhood memories into a screenplay, initially pitching it to Nickelodeon as a children's series. When the network rejected their family story, Spike saw the cinematic potential and decided to bring it to the big screen instead.

With a budget of 14 million dollars, the entire production was filmed in just two months, almost entirely on Arlington Place, a single block in Bedford-Stuyvesant. This one-block enclave became the perfect backdrop for capturing the essence of Black family life in 1970s Brooklyn. What started as rejected television content became a beloved cultural touchstone that preserved a specific moment in Black American experience. Crooklyn stands as proof that sometimes the most personal stories, rooted in authentic family experiences, create the most lasting cinema.

I have been collecting and archiving Black films since 2008. Over the years, I have built a massive digital library dedicated to preserving and sharing this history with the community. On this page, I have shared this history for one reason only: love.

Each post, screenshot, newspaper clipping, trailer, and write-up is intended to present Black film history as it is. Some films are nostalgic, classic, groundbreaking, awful, controversial, and even disturbing. But all of them are part of the historical record and deserve to be documented and preserved.

One of the most important parts of this archive is the research and writing. Over 600 film write-ups have been created to provide historical context, production details, cultural significance, and insights into preservation for films that are often forgotten, overlooked, or misunderstood.

I wanted to share some archive statistics so people can see the scale of this work and know that Black film history is in good hands. Thank you to everyone who has supported the page over the years, as well as the distribution companies and preservation groups that helped bring many of these films back to life for newer generations.

Night shift shout out!

In September 2025, the North Little Rock Fire Department in Arkansas made history by fielding the first all-Black female fire crew to serve a full shift together. The crew consisted of Captain Scherita Buchanan, Lieutenant Chandra Minor, Engineer Kimberly Holloway, and Firefighter Aisha Green, marking a significant milestone in public service representation.

Similar, smaller, or voluntary all-Black female crews or shifts may have occurred previously, but the 2025 North Little Rock crew is recognized as a pioneering full-shift unit, often highlighted in discussions of Arkansas's, changing fire service demographics.
