Thank you to .weeraratne for this feature on our latest showcase. It was a pleasure to discuss the philosophy of “Explosion Batik” and our vision for the future.

While I am the one speaking to the brand’s evolution, the present is beautifully shaped by Swanee’s daughters . It is their artistry and teaching that allows us to keep reimagining these archives for the modern stage.
Honored to be the third generation carrying this name forward.

Sales of Batik, Colombo, 1967

A beautiful intersection of art and family. This 1967 archival shot features Manel Jagoda, the teenage daughter of modernist pioneer Swanee Jayawardene, modelling one of her mother’s unique batik creations at one of her exhibitions.

Swanee approached fabric as an extension of the canvas, moving between painting and dye to elevate batik into fine art. Seeing her daughter wear these early works highlights the personal spirit behind the brand’s early days in Colombo.
