A beautiful, restorative result from Dr Lisa Jagan at Clinica London, and a great example of why eyelid surgery isn't always as simple as fixing the side that droops.

Some patients come in with one eyelid drooping more obviously than the other. But before operating on just that side, Dr Jagan checks for something called Hering's Law.

When one eyelid is lifted and corrected, the other "normal" eyelid can actually drop lower than where it started. This is why, in some cases, bilateral eyelid surgery is recommended from the start. It gives a more balanced, symmetrical result.

For this patient, Dr Jagan also used a scarless approach to ptosis surgery. That means no incision was made on the visible eyelid skin, which is especially valuable for patients with pigmented skin types, where scarring can be more visible or slower to fade.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Sophia Watts, Consultant Dermatologist, to our specialist team.

Dr Watts provides expert dermatological care for adults across a wide range of skin, hair and scalp conditions, with particular expertise in:

• Acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea
• Inflammatory and autoimmune skin conditions
• Hair loss and scalp disorders
• Mole and skin lesion assessment
• Skin cancer diagnosis and treatment
• Dermatological surgery

Dr Watts has a particular interest in hair disorders and hair loss, with more than seven years' experience working in a specialist hair clinic.

She trained in London, completed her specialist dermatology training at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and is currently a Consultant Dermatologist at University College London Hospitals (UCLH).

Alongside her clinical expertise, Dr Watts is known for her warm and approachable manner. She takes the time to understand what matters to each patient and works with them to develop an individualised and realistic treatment plan.

You don't always need to be on Harley Street to see us.

For some patients, a virtual consultation can make accessing specialist ophthalmic care more convenient, particularly when travelling to London isn't practical.

Virtual appointments may be suitable for:

From hooded eyelids and a tired appearance to puffy lower lids and chalazia, there are many different reasons patients seek specialist eyelid care.

Ms Michelle Ting also explains what to expect after blepharoplasty, including bruising and swelling, stitch removal and when most patients feel ready to return to their usual activities.

What exactly does an oculoplastic and lacrimal surgeon do?

Lacrimal surgery is specialised surgery involving the tear ducts, and it can help patients whose eyes are persistently watering because their tear drainage system has become narrowed or blocked.

In this video, Miss Jane Olver explains:

• What the tear ducts do
• Why tear duct narrowing can cause troublesome watering eyes
• When non-surgical treatments may be considered
• When surgery may be needed
• How endoscopic endonasal DCR (dacryocystorhinostomy) can restore tear drainage

Jane has specialised in lacrimal surgery since 1994 and has helped advance and promote endonasal DCR in London, the UK and internationally.

One of the advantages of this technique is that the surgery is performed through the nose, meaning there is no external incision, stitches or visible scar.

Most patients can return to work within around a week, depending on their individual recovery.

Not every childhood eye problem can wait.

Many children can be seen first by their optician, but some symptoms should be assessed promptly by a specialist ophthalmologist.

Parents should seek specialist advice if their child has:

• A sudden-onset squint
• A white-looking pupil
• Persistent or unexplained watering
• Recurrent styes or chalazia that don't settle
• Red, painful or light-sensitive eyes
• Blurred vision or a noticeable change in vision
• Swollen or inflamed eyelids that don't improve

Some childhood eye conditions require prescription treatment, further investigation or surgery, so early assessment can make all the difference in protecting a child's vision.
