In the first edition of Ask Karen? feature, we asked Karen her thoughts on culture today and what Andy and Jean would think of art and fashion today? And who are the Warhol’s and Basquiats of the day?
▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️ "Jean... Well I haven’t really seen another body of work that identifies the viewpoint of Jean Michael Basquiat, as he was a sartorialist of events during the 80s, he incorporated the feeling of young black urban struggle in today’s modern civilisation but since MySpace to it’s harder then ever to find an authentic voice of the inner struggle of a young black boy without it looking like a boring copy...”
▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️
As for Warhol, critics that are more authentic .. and still have the space to tell it like it is ... I've always felt that Andy was an artist / critic who had the capacity to predict brilliance .. I’m blessed to know .als and , 2 critics of the arts ..
No , they are not trying to be the next art team, as they are both writers. But, we can find on occasion, someone new and fresh, from their critic..

A snippet of the brilliance of :

’A lot of trends seen on the runway are heavily influenced by q***r sub-cultures, or q***r icons breaking boundaries from past, present & future.

From the bisexual trouser wearing boldness, of the likes of Marlene Dietrich and Ma Rainey, to the explosion of disco nightlife, the rise and exposure of kink, and of course the ballroom scene of the 1980s, LGBT history has provided many visual stories of identity expression.

A lot of highly celebrated fashion designers are in fact from the LGBT community, so you could argue fashion provides a platform of appreciation on a ground level.

However, a quick google of the most celebrated q***r designers will often bring up lists of mostly white gay men, such as Alexander McQueen, Gianni Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, and Valentino.

When you look at that issue, where only certain identities are influencing decisions on what aspects of a community makes it onto the runway, and in what context, that is where the appropriation and appreciation line becomes complex. And that's only looking at the direct influence of gay designers, when looking at heterosexual designers that's a whole other discussion.’

About 2 and a half weeks late, classic in classic Amelia fashion.. Extremely busy of late, not even just London busy, busy busy.

In honour of London’s first Pride Fashion Week event on behalf of I got in touch with FOUNDER .

Mutale is a magnificent woman, not only is she the founder of Positive Runway, she founded the Justina Mutale Foundation, an organization dedicated to educating and empowering black African women; an Honorary Ambassador for Gender Equality and spokesperson for the International Women’s Think Tank; and in 2012 was bestowed with the honour of ‘African woman of the year’.

I had the immense pleasure to be able to ask Mutale some questions about the complex intersection of appreciation and appropriation of fashion and LGBTQ+ culture and the importance of organisations like Positive Runway as a stage for undisputed inclusivity.

I cannot think of a better reason to break CONT’D posting hiatus than in celebration of Pride month, and to share the news of an incredible addition to this years schedule: Pride Fashion Week by is making it’s London debut.
A showcase of LGBTQI+ fashion designers, models and performers from all over the world, descending on the Southbank, to raise awareness of Sexual Health, commemorate the lives of those we have loved and lost to HIV/AIDS and celebrate our community.

Lucy Liu sticks out in my head as an actress I adored growing up because she was so ‘bizarrely’ beautiful. Ally McBeal was my poison and, although I was 8, the dancing babies, cat heads, the sweaty man and Lucy Liu were enough to keep me more than entertained.

Lucy Liu is the 2nd Asian American woman to be betrothed the honour of a star on the infamous and is placed next to the first to receive the accolade, legendary actress Anna May Wong who got starred in 1960, almost 60 years ago!

REALLY?

I don’t want to be negative Nancy, because she’s a t**t, so instead I’ll do some maths:

5.6 % of the American population are Asian American.
There are 2603 stars on The Walk of Fame.
That means there should 146 if there was an accurate racial representation.
There are 3 Asian Americans.

Little did I know that ‘bizarrely’ beautiful was just grossly misrepresented.

“They just weren’t making them here because we weren’t yet invited to the table. I was lucky that trailblazers like Anna May Wong and Bruce Lee came before me. If my body of work somehow helped bridge the gap between stereotypical roles, first given to Anna May, and mainstream success today” Lucy Liu, speech May 1st 2019

The continues; part 2 of Lucy Siegle Guardian article forecasting future of sustaining the fashion industry through innovation

5. A wool cardigan will be prized like a Birkin bag
Naturals will be prized and precious fabrics, to be cared for, protected and handed down as heirlooms. (They’ll also be prized for not shedding microfibres.)
6. Heavily backed Silk Inc has been shown to change silk from water-repellent to water-wicking (essential for sportswear). It can also be used to coat cashmere or nylon to make wool and other materials shrink-resistant.
7. You’ll print your own outfit ...
First you’ll 3D scan your body; then, for a precise fit, you’ll buy a file with your preferred design and 3D-print or 3D-knit your clothes at home or at a designated store. Perhaps a decade or two from widespread availability but an incredible futuristic visual non the less!

8. A big chunk of your wardrobe will probably be refurbished or remanufactured: Recommerce”. Patagonia has teamed up with online reseller Yerdle and gently launched the website Worn Wear, you return your pre-worn clothes to a shop, where you get credit. Imagine if you were contacted daily by an organisation asking if you’d finished with your trousers. It’s going to happen.

9. Self-mending clothes
At Penn State University in the US, squid teeth proteins have been turned into liquid and used to coat materials. When torn, the textile can be repaired by placing the two ripped edges together. It’s seamless, glue-free and threadless – just add warm water. I’m sorry but holy s**t!

10. In the UK, an estimated £30bn of clothes hang unworn in bulging wardrobes. A model that best serves designer yet wider scale adoption is on the horizon.

MPs have passed a motion making the UK parliament the first in the world to declare an “environment and climate emergency”.

The symbolic move – recognising the urgency needed to combat the climate crisis – follows a wave of protests launched by the Rebellion strikers in recent weeks.

In light of this announcement, that labour declared as a victory for their party, another flurry of lefty squabbling to determine who indeed should get the credit has erupted and could surface in a middle class pub near you!

Welcome ladies and gentleman for another round of ‘Who’s the leftest left of them all’ Let’s meet today’s contestants!

Contestant 1) The Labour Party
Corbyn non working class working class hero, here ‘green’ policy is a small fish in the biggest power pond

Contestant 2) The Green Party
Queen Caroline Lucas at the helm, green by name green by nature but about as much power as a Nigel Farage tweet in a Claiton-on-Sea boozer (loads and loads but at the same time not much at all)

Contestant 3) Extinction Rebellion
This force of nature stormed streets forcing the issue, did they open an already loosened jar?

Contestant 4) Greta Thunberg, the darling of the climate change movement, perhaps the most powerful left wing tool all, can’t believe it’s taken until now to put a little girl with pig tails in the line of right wing fire

Now the evidence:
‘The public who care did this. It has nothing to do with a group of people looking to promote their political party🤬’

“Welcome to the policy 30 years on.
Talk is cheap, lets have not just a vote swing.”

“Sour grapes are not a good look in politics. Under Corbyn climate action is a priority at conference every year. Greens are all talk no action. Green party started because climate action was a vote winner, but what action have the Greens taken since then?”

“Sorry, I don't think it's fair for Labour to take all the credit on this.”

“Thanks to you mean”

And the progression points go to.......

I think it’s fair to say I have a somewhat keener than average interest in the viability of ‘sustainable fashion’ although my social media’s pseudo microcosm constructed by cookies and algorithms would have me believe the whole world is fu***ng off fast fashion, sadly that isn’t the case.

Sustainable fashion literature comes in two flavours: solid gold and absolute s**te. Furthering my slow descent up the ar****le of Lucy Siegel, a clear hero of the fashion and sustainability movement, top babe and top CONT’D, I’d like to share a top ten exert from her piece in The Guardian last year around the time governments announced there would be an inquest into fast fashion practice

Ten ways to make fashion greener:

1. Fibres will be fruity - banana (stem) ‘sylk’ and fruit leathers principally from waste pineapple leaves, cost effective and significant less taxing on the planet.

2. Bio leather
Created by Modern Meadow by applying sugar feedstock to yeast cells that have been engineered to create collagen. It is then pressed into sheets and tanned (in an eco-friendly process) to create cow-less leather.

3. Colours will be more natural:
Toxic chemical dyes to be phased out in favour of those that siphon pigments from plants and sugar. According to trials, these techniques also use a 10th of the water of conventional dyeing.

4. Your washing machine could be regulated by law:
The synthetic clothing sheds microfibres (fragments of plastic under 5mm), that ultimately end up in the oceans. Washing machine filters and fine-mesh laundry bags can prevent this and according to Siegel, these may become mandatory.

For the rest of the top ten see the next post and for the full article go to website.

What do Helena Christensen’s basque and Alexandra Shulman’s column have in common?
—-⏲—-
They are both deliberately provocative.

If you hadn’t heard wrote in her article for the Daily Trash , excuse me, 🚽, that looked ‘tacky’ then went on to add ‘it is more likely she did it to show she is not in the past’.

It seems almost too obvious to point out the irony of a former-serious-writer-reduced-to-headline fodder-gossip-garbage accusing someone else of living in the past. 🙊

Frankly if one hasn’t changed since the ‘basque appropriate’ age of 22, then there is no reason to throw out perfectly good clobber. If I were Helena Christensen I’d probably never wear clothes👯‍♀️

Jokes aside it is quite evident that poor Helena is collateral damage in what I’m sure promises to be a series of heinous PR tactics.

Vogue boss husband says: “How sad she has become so bitter and sunk to a new level” 🧻

I think that Vogue boss husbands, wife’s, mistresses, cousins, sources close to’s, the whole gang should reserve judgement on what they deem the ‘lowest level’ until the premier of Gold Dust Nation 🔭

Gold Dust Nation will be a tv series, penned by Shulman, portraying the inner workings of Vogue House in the 90s and has been coined the new Devil Wears Prada 😈

As far as click bate bulls**t on the perpetuated female feud goes, its nice to see it evenly spread across generations, after all ageism is bad, right Alexandra?

*disclaimer; ‘basque appropriate’ age is ironic, any person any age can wear a basque anywhere they so choose and it’s as much my business as understanding 5G

Gluing their naked arses against cabinet windows might not have been enough for the masses to take note 😴, but stand between a man and his morning commute and suddenly astounding ground had been made in the business of waking everyone the f**k up to the extinction rebellion cause: climate change 🌎

Peaceful protests have been going on in London this week that aim to disrupt travel some of the capitals busiest areas 🚧🚧🚧. I witnessed the Circus of excess first hand on Friday, where Oxford Circus crossing played host to a guerrilla fashion show 👘👩🏻‍🎤👑which was jovial affair, signing and dancing in the name of preventing fast fashion.👗👗👗

This morning on the other hand, I’ll throw my guilty environmentalist hands up with a hypocritical foot forward but for at least 15 minutes this morning I was pi**ed the f**k off after realising that the first leg of my bus route stopped two stops before it should and the second leg wouldn’t start for 4 stops after it should aka I was f**ked🤬

After walking off my strop through the trafficless parliament square and seeing the protesters at 7:30am be so dedicated to raising awareness for climate crisis to save the human race, well needless to say this temporary pain was necessary and to quote Owen Jones:

‘If you think causes outrageous inconvenience, boy are you in for a shock when climate chaos envelops the planet!’ 👏👏
