Friedensreich Hundertwasser was a visionary who treated the “straight line” as a biological error. While the 20th century was obsessed with sterile, mass-produced boxes, Hundertwasser was advocating for architecture as a “third skin”—a living, breathing layer that should grow and change alongside its inhabitants.

His approach to sustainability was less about high-tech sensors and more about radical biological integration. He championed “Tree Tenants”—actual trees living within high-rise apartments—and “Window Rights,” the idea that every tenant should be able to personally reshape and decorate the facade around their window. He believed that the horizontal belonged to nature and the vertical to man; his buildings often feature undulating floors and soil-covered roofs that blend seamlessly into the landscape.

For a practical example, look at the public toilets in Kawakawa, New Zealand. Built in 1999 using recycled bricks and glass bottles, the structure features a living roof and integrated greenery. It’s a functional reminder that even the most basic infrastructure can be designed as a “peace treaty” with nature. Long before “green roofs” were a corporate trend, Hundertwasser was proving that our cities should function as diverse, organic ecosystems rather than gray, industrial grids.

As the year comes to its end I wanted to take a moment out of our end-of-year hiatus to jump back online and say a huge thank you to each and every one of you that has continued to support us over the past 12 months.

Just a quick one from our small team to say Merry Christmas and to thank you for another year 💚♥️

Our out-of-office is now officially switched on and we’re looking forward to some slow days, long walks, and good food with the people we love back in NZ for a few weeks 🌞
