New York-based Iranian designer Gabriel Hendifar has transformed a 140-square-metre loft into a layered and deeply personal living environment shaped by textiles, materiality, and memory. Two inherited Iranian tapestries became the emotional foundation of the space, connecting the apartment’s earthy palette to generations of family history.

Located in a former industrial building from the 1970s, the loft reflects a dialogue between nostalgia and reinvention. Drawing from his experience as the son of Iranian immigrants, Hendifar has created a home where heritage, architecture, and contemporary living converge, turning memory into a tangible design language.

طراح ایرانی ساکن نیویورک، یک لافت ۱۴۰ متری را با سکوهای پوشیده از فرش، متریال‌های لایه‌لایه و منسوجات غنی طراحی کرده است؛ فضایی که هم حال‌وهوایی سینمایی دارد و هم عمیقاً درون‌نگر و شخصی به نظر می‌رسد.

در این خانه، دو فرشینه ایرانی که به‌عنوان هدیه خانه جدید از سوی دخترخاله‌اش به او داده شده بودند، به یکی از مهم‌ترین عناصر احساسی و بصری فضا تبدیل شدند. این آثار که نسل به نسل در خانواده منتقل شده‌اند، حس عمیقی از تعلق و آشنایی را در او زنده کردند و به شکلی شگفت‌انگیز با پالت رنگی خاکی و آبی آپارتمان هم‌خوانی داشتند. هندیفار می‌گوید: «این فرشینه‌ها از مادرِ او به او رسیده بودند و پیش از آن نیز متعلق به مادرِ مادرش بودند... انگار پیامی از بُعدی دیگر دریافت می‌کردم، چون پالت رنگی آپارتمان دقیقاً با رنگ‌های این فرشینه‌ها هماهنگ بود؛ حتی در کوچک‌ترین جزئیات.»

هندیفار توضیح می‌دهد: «این ساختمان هنوز گواهی اقامت هنری خود را حفظ کرده است؛ ویژگی‌ای که در شهر نیویورک بسیار نادر محسوب می‌شود.»

این بستر معماری، هویت چندلایه خانه را تقویت می‌کند؛ فضایی که میان گذشته و حال، خاطره و بازآفرینی، در نوسان است. آپارتمان بازتابی از زندگی شخصی هندیفار نیز هست؛ فرزند مهاجران ایرانی که در سال ۱۹۷۹ به ایالات متحده آمدند. نتیجه، فضایی است که در آن خاطره به ماده تبدیل می‌شود و تجربه زیسته به زبان طراحی؛ خانه‌ای که هم ریشه در گذشته دارد و هم

The Art of Looking Closer

What if the most extraordinary worlds exist beneath our feet?

In DIBA’s latest artistic feature, we explore the work of Jasmin Sian, an artist whose creative process begins not in pristine studios, but in direct conversation with nature. Among wild grasses, shifting light, and overlooked forms of life, she discovers entire universes hidden in the smallest details.

Working with discarded paper, delicate cutouts, and careful observation, Sian invites us to slow down and reconsider how we see the world around us. Her work reminds us that beauty is not always found in grand gestures, but often in quiet moments of attention.

At a time when everything moves faster than ever, her art offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to pause.
هنرِ عمیق‌تر دیدن
اگر شگفت‌انگیزترین جهان‌ها درست زیر پای ما پنهان شده باشند چه؟
در جدیدترین روایت هنری دیبا، به دنیای Jasmin Sian سر می‌زنیم؛ هنرمندی که فرآیند خلاقیتش نه در استودیوهای بی‌نقص، بلکه در گفت‌وگویی مستقیم با طبیعت شکل می‌گیرد. میان علف‌های وحشی، نور متغیر و جزئیات نادیده‌گرفته‌شده، او جهان‌هایی تازه را کشف می‌کند.
Sian با استفاده از کاغذهای دورریختنی، برش‌های ظریف و مشاهده‌ای عمیق، ما را دعوت می‌کند تا سرعت را کم کنیم و دوباره به جهان اطرافمان نگاه کنیم. آثار او یادآور این حقیقت‌اند که زیبایی همیشه در چیزهای بزرگ نیست؛ گاهی در کوچک‌ترین جزئیات پنهان شده است.

Sometimes a culture hides in the simplest things, in a color that lingers on the skin, a scent that settles in memory, and a ritual that connects generations.

This time in DIBA Magazine, we turn to turmeric in Indian culture; an everyday element that transforms into a cultural language at the heart of life, cooking, and ritual. From daily homes to wedding ceremonies, from the touch of women carrying memory to a color that symbolizes blessing, purity, and continuity, turmeric is not just a spice, it is a narrative.

A narrative of connection, of generations passing on, and of the moment life moves from one stage to another; through hands that laugh, cry, and silently transfer meaning beyond words.

گاهی یک فرهنگ، در ساده‌ترین چیزها پنهان است؛ در رنگی که روی پوست می‌ماند، در بویی که در حافظه می‌نشیند، و در آیینی که نسل‌ها را به هم پیوند می‌دهد.

این بار در مجله دیبا، به سراغ زردچوبه در فرهنگ هند رفته‌ایم؛ ماده‌ای روزمره که در بطن زندگی، آشپزی و آیین، به زبانی فرهنگی تبدیل می‌شود. از خانه‌های روزمره تا مراسم ازدواج، از لمس دست‌های زنانی که خاطره حمل می‌کنند تا رنگی که نماد برکت، پاکی و تداوم است، زردچوبه فقط یک ادویه نیست، یک روایت است.

روایتی از پیوند، از گذر نسل‌ها، و از لحظه‌ای که زندگی از یک مرحله به مرحله‌ای دیگر وارد می‌شود؛ با دستانی که می‌خندند، اشک می‌ریزند و معنا را بی‌صدا منتقل می‌کنند.

Traditional clothing in Khorasan is shaped by geography, climate, and daily life.
The region’s semi-arid environment and, in some areas, nomadic traditions have directly influenced garment structure and materials.

Men’s clothing is generally simple and functional: long shirts, loose trousers, and lightweight outer layers designed for ease of movement and durability, often in neutral tones suited to the environment.

Women’s clothing is more layered and visually detailed, with long dresses, vests, head coverings, embroidery, and in some communities, coin decoration and jewelry that also reflect social and cultural identity.

Among different ethnic groups in Khorasan, variations are clearly visible:
Kurdish communities often use layered, expressive silhouettes; Turkmen clothing is known for deep red tones and structured forms; rural dress prioritizes practicality and adaptation to local conditions.

پوشاک سنتی خراسان تحت تأثیر مستقیم جغرافیا، اقلیم و شیوه زندگی شکل گرفته است.
اقلیم نیمه‌خشک منطقه و در برخی نواحی، سنت‌های کوچ‌نشینی، نقش مهمی در ساختار و جنس پوشاک داشته‌اند.

پوشاک مردان معمولاً ساده و کاربردی است: پیراهن‌های بلند، شلوارهای گشاد و لایه‌های سبک بیرونی که برای حرکت راحت و دوام بیشتر طراحی شده‌اند و اغلب در طیف رنگ‌های خنثی و هماهنگ با محیط دیده می‌شوند.

پوشاک زنان ساختاری لایه‌مندتر و جزئیات بصری بیشتری دارد؛ شامل پیراهن‌های بلند، جلیقه‌ها، پوشش سر، گلدوزی و در برخی جوامع، استفاده از سکه‌دوزی و زیورآلات که علاوه بر زیبایی، بیانگر هویت اجتماعی و فرهنگی است.

در میان اقوام مختلف خراسان نیز تفاوت‌ها کاملاً مشهود است:
پوشاک کردهای خراسان با لایه‌ها و فرم‌های متنوع شناخته می‌شود؛ لباس ترکمن‌های خراسان با رنگ قرمز تیره و ساختار منظم شناخته می‌شود؛ و پوشاک روستایی بیش از هر چیز بر کارکرد و انطباق با شرایط محلی تأکید دارد.
