Honoured to share that Tanaka Eyewear has been longlisted for the Dezeen Awards 2025 in sustainability.

This is my third time to reach the longlist, and while I am grateful for the recognition, my hope is to advance further this year.

Out of more than 4,300 entries from 89 countries, our project stands among 80 selected in sustainability. Recognition at this level, before our official launch, gives me strength to keep pushing the work forward.

Great news! I’m honoured to have won Sustainable Eyewear of the Year and New Designer of the Year at the Love Eyewear Awards 2025. This recognition is a significant milestone, giving me even more confidence as I finalise the details ahead of the launch.

2024 is almost over! It wasn’t the most small business-friendly year, but I’m so proud to have achieved a dream three years in the making—designing and handcrafting the first pair of glasses for myself! Finally I can see things now😅

Passion and obsession

I spent over four years researching materials and perfecting his techniques for 3D design and craft.

Following my maiden voyage into the creation of Dappe, I realised that things weren’t as simple as they might seem. Where would he source manufacturing and which manufacturing method would suit his idea. I visited every trade show I could, meeting professional jewelry makers, model makers, casters, machine engineers and product designers. I had the opportunity of a brain-storming meeting with a technical team from a big Japanese manufacturer – I thought this was it but it wasn’t, far from it. It was going to be a very complicated and costly process; even creating a prototype was way over my budget.

Armed only with my unwavering belief in my product, I threw all he had into making my own prototype. I would only have to learn 3D printing, investing casting, machining, hand-crafting, jewelry making, adonising and polishing. My living room became a digital workshop, his TV screen was a computer monitor, the kitchen was my laboratory and a tent in the garden provided sanctuary for the messier jobs. This was a rewarding, fun but very tough time for me. All my time and money were dedicated to perfecting my vision.

Eventually, I achieved my eureka moment, discovering a unique material, made from recycled paper, which was created for high-end interior furnishing. This was the turning point, I had found the ideal material to manufacture Dappe.
